3.  STEPHEN3 CAUDILL (JAMES CAUDILL2 SR, STEPHAN1 CAUDILL) was born Abt. 1763 in Lunenberg County, VA, and died July 26, 1839 in Sandlick, Letcher County, KY.  He married (1) JANE DEHART April 03, 1784 in Wilkes County, NC.    He married (2) JANE DEHART April 03, 1784 in Wilkes Co, NC.    He married (3) SARAH ADAMS 1791 in Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, NC, daughter of BENJAMIN JR and HENRIETTA CAUDILL.  She was born Abt. 1776 in Loudon County, VA, and died October 1842 in Letcher County, KY.

 

Notes for STEPHEN CAUDILL:

Stephen was an American Revolutionary War veteran. He is buried in the Watty Caudill Cemetery, Dry Fork, Letcher County, KY

 

Perry County, State of Kentucky.

On this 12th day of August 1833 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the County Court of Perry County now sitting, Stephen Cordill, a resident of Perry County, aged 70 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service as a volunteer in the Militia of the United States shortly before General Gates defeat at Camden, South Carolina for three months in Wilks County North Carolina where he lived in Capt. John Morgan's Company in Col. Ben Hern's Regt, in the line of the State of North Carolina. From Wilkes he marched to the mouth of Rocky River, then back to guard the frontier of Wilkes against the Tories and Indians and after serving out his term aforesaid he was honorably discharged at the mouth of Rockey River in Wilkes County, North Carolina by Col. Noah who then commanded the Regt shortly after Gates' defeat. He does not remember any regular officers. He again entered the service some time before the Battle at Kings Mountain as a volunteer for three months in Wilkes County where he lived in Capt. Samuel Johnson's Co in Col. Cleaveland's Regt. His major was Dick Allen. He was marched from there to King's Mountain and was in hearing of the Battle but the foot party did not reach the Battle in time but in time to receive the prisoners as they were taken. He remembers to have seen Col. Shelby and General Campbell. He was marched back to Wilkes County as a guard of the prisoners when after serving out his tour he was honorably discharged by Col. Cleaveland in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Next in l78l in Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he resided, he volunteered for three months in Capt. Johnson's Company in the 5th Regt (Col's name forgotten) on the line of the State of North Carolina. He was marched from Wilkes to Surrey and then back to Wilkes and after serving out his term of three months he was discharged in the year 1781 in Wilkes County by Capt. Samuel Johnson. On this trip he recollects no regular officers. He was born in Lunenberg County, Va. At each time he lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina where he entered the service. Since he has lived in Wilkes then moved to Kentucky where he now lives. His descharges he has long since lost not knowing that they would ever profit him anything. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any State.

4.  JAMES CAUDILL3 JR. (JAMES CAUDILL2 SR, STEPHAN1 CAUDILL) was born Abt. 1753 in Lunenburg County, VA, and died May 30, 1840 in Perry County, KY.  He married MARY ADAMS 1770 in Wilkes County, NC.  She was born 1760.

 

Notes for JAMES CAUDILL JR.:

James initially went to Rowan County, NC, with his father and then removed ca. 1780 to Wilkes County, NC. James and his family eventually settled in Perry County, KY, (now Letcher County). A Kentucky Highway Marker honoring James was erected on Kentucky Route 7, near the small cemetery where he is buried. The Marker reads as follows: "James Caudill, born in Virginia in 1753, first came to Big Cowen Creek in 1781. Because of Indians, he took his family back to North Carolina. Returning here in 1792 with his family, he built a cabin, stayed several years went back to North Carolina. They settled here permanently in 1811. He was progentitor to a large widespread mountain family. He died in 1840."

James' dying request was that he be buried on his own land saying that he did not want his dust to mingle with another's soil. He was buried on his own land on Rockhouse Creek, in Perry County, KY (now Letcher County).

James was an American Revolutionary War veteran. The following was copied from the Cordell Clippings (a semiannual newsletter of the Cordell Association), No. 10, Jan. 1994, Page 13 & 14:

Pension Application

 

The following is a transcript of his [James Caudill, Jr.'s] 1833 Pension application, followed by some accompanying War Department Documents, obtained from the National Archives in Washington, DC.

 

 

 

State of Kentucky, Perry County, on this 12th Day of August 1833, personally appeared in open court before the justices of the County Court of Perry County now sitting, James Cordill, a resident of said county and state, aged 80 years, who being first duly sworn according to law and on his oath makes the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832 -

He was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He has long since lost his discharge. He lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina where he served in the War each time. Since the Revolution he has lived in Wilkes and for years past in Kentucky, where he now lives. He recollects General Green, General Gates and General Rutherford. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Rolls of the agency of any State nor has it ever been.

James Caudill, Jr., married a North Carolina girl, Mary, thought to be an Adams, twin sister of Sarah Adams, who married James Jr.'s brother, Stephen Caudill, and daughter of Benjamin and Henrietta (Caudill) Adams. No record has been found of this marriage or proof that Mary's maiden name was Adams.

6.  DIANA "DYANER"5 ADAMS (HENRIETTA4 CAUDILL, STEPHEN3, JAMES CAUDILL2 SR, STEPHAN1 CAUDILL) was born May 15, 1831 in Perry County, KY, and died June 06, 1873 in Letcher County, KY.  She married RANDOLPH POLLEY July 09, 1848 in Whitesburg, Letcher Co Ky by Simpson Adams, son of DAVID POLLEY and HENRIETTA HOLBROOK.  He was born October 28, 1829 in Letcher Co Ky, and died January 26, 1898 in LawrenceCo KY.

 

Notes for RANDOLPH POLLEY:

Civil war Pension application Nancy Polley .   Lists date of death as January 26, 1898.  Nancy maiden name is listed as ENGLE on this application.  Application states she and Randolph were married Dec 25, 1872 by Simpson Adams at Whitesburg Ky.  Randolph had applied for his pension before his death.  He stated he was a private from Hindman Ky Company A Harlan Battalion Ky Volunteers and that he was discharged on or about January 13, 1863.  He was recruited by Co M, 14th Regt Kentucky Cavalry Volunteers and while on the was to be mustered into the regiment, he with others were captured byt the rebels and was paroled and never exchanged.  He claimed his pension on "brokern leg, heart trouble, and almost blind.  His grandson Levi Miles age 20, gave as affidavit to the application and tells about his broken leg.   Also giving affidavit is Ezekiel Sarver, son of Nancy and James E. Sarver.

KY  Hubbard Cem.  She married JOHN PRESTON BURDINE HUBBARD September 21, 1886, son of EDD HUBBARD and ANNA HALL.  He was born February 27, 1866 in Wise Co. Virginia, and died May 03, 1940 in Lincoln Co (Kings MTn) Ky.

 

Notes for JOHN PRESTON BURDINE HUBBARD:

John always wore a suit when working even in the garten.   Married a second time following Nancy death.  To a much younger girl

maybe 15 or 16.  Divorce her after she suggested that they sell the house.  Nancy was called Nannie and she is buried in the Hubbard cemetery in Pulaski County Ky near place called Estesburg.    When John died the man who owned the property that had to be cross to get to the cemetery would not allow them to cross over to the Cem.  Monteville Hubbard offer him $500 for access but he refused.  Another site had to be found.  John was buried in the Pleasant point cem. This cemetery was directly across from home and farm that Monteville owned in Kingts Mtn , Ky. Lincoln County Ky
