Cardross, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He
married (1) ISABELL OF MAR 1295 in kildrummy Castle Aberdeenshire Scotland. She was born 1278 in Kildrummy,
Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and died 1320.
He married (2) ELIZABETH DE BURGH 1302 in Writtle, Essex, England.
Notes for ROBERT I BRUCE "THE BRUCE" KINGS OF SCOTLAND:
Robert Bruce
Robert Bruce
(1274-1329), liberator, and, as Robert I, king of Scotland (1306-1329). He was
originally named Robert de Bruce, and to distinguish him from his father and
grandfather, who had the same name, he is often referred to as Robert de Bruce
VIII. He is also called Robert the Bruce. As earl of Carrick he paid homage to
King Edward I of England, who, in 1296, defeated King John de Baliol and
thereafter refused to acknowledge another king of Scotland. Bruce later
abandoned Edward's cause and joined other Scottish leaders in taking up arms
for the independence of his country. In 1299, the year after the Scottish
patriot Sir William Wallace was defeated by Edward at Falkirk, Bruce, then
still in favor with Edward, was made one of the four regents who ruled the
kingdom in the name of Baliol. In 1305 he was one of those consulted in the
decision to make Scotland a province of England. In 1306 he met an old enemy,
the Scottish patriot John Comyn, who was the nephew of Baliol; a quarrel
occurred, and Bruce stabbed Comyn. Bruce proclaimed his right to the throne,
and on March 27, 1306, he was crowned king at Scone.
Bruce was deposed,
however, in 1307 by Edward's army and forced to flee to the highlands and then
to the little island of Rathlin on the coast of Antrim (now in Northern
Ireland). In his absence all his estates were confiscated, and he and his
followers were excommunicated. He continued to recruit followers, however, and
in less than two years he wrested nearly all of Scotland from the English.
Bruce again defeated the English in 1314 in the Battle of Bannockburn (see
Bannockburn, Battle of), twice invaded England, and in 1323 concluded with King
Edward II of England a truce for 13 years. After the accession of King Edward
III in 1327, war again broke out, and the Scots won again. In 1328 they secured
a treaty recognizing the independence of Scotland and the right of Bruce to the
throne.
In his later years
Bruce was stricken with what is believed to have been leprosy and lived in
seclusion at Cardross Castle, on the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde,
where he died. He was succeeded by his son, David II. Bruce's grandson, Robert
II, who succeeded David, was the first king of the Stuart house of English and
Scottish royalty.

n 1220 Malcolm, son of Fergus de Cunninghame,
founds Cunningham branch of Ranfurly. Richard de Cunningham's son Harvey
distinguishes himself against the Norwegians in 1263 at the Battle of Largs
near Ayrshire's coast. In 1264 Richard is granted Kilmaurs by Alexander III. Edward Cunningham, father of Reginald
Cunningham, founder of the Cunningham branch of Glengarnock dies in 1290. In
1295 Robert Cunningham fights along with
Robert the Bruce against John Balliol, and becomes the founder of the
Cunninghams of Polmaise. Robert Cunningham, the
nephew of Edward Cunningham, is beheaded by the English, his head placed
atop the tower of Lochmaban Castle in 1299.
1306-1398
In 1306 Robert the
Bruce proclaims himself King of Scots; a Robert Cunningham declares for Bruce.
In 1314 Edward II is defeated at Bannockburn. James Cunningham, son of Gilbert,
is granted Hassendean in Roxburghshire by Robert the Bruce in 1318. Two years
later Robert Cunningham is granted lands in Cunninghame, Lambruchtan and Grugar
by Bruce.
Sir William Cunningham
(I), son of Hugh de Cunninghame, sits in the Scottish Parliament in 1344. Two
years later the Scottish King David II is captured by English at the Battle of
Neville's Cross; Robert, grandson of Hugh de Cunninghame, gives himself as ransom
for the king. Robert's brother, Thomas, becomes ancestor of the Cunninghams of
Caprington, Enterkine, and Bedland.
In 1366, Sir William
Cunningham (I) is made Earl of Carrick. Eight years later he is made Sheriff of
Ayr but dies sometime between 1396 and 1399. His son, Sir William Cunningham
(II), is knighted in 1384. One year later Sir William Cunningham (II) helps
defeat the army of the Duke of Lancaster.
Hugh de Cunninghame,

Drumquhassil, Ballindaloch, Balbougie, and Banton, dies. Sir William Cunningham
(II) obtains Danielston, Kilmarnock, Finlaystone and Glencairn in 1390 and eight years later
is granted the Barony of Redhall by Robert III.
1409-1499
Sir William Cunningham
(II) is made Sheriff of Ayr in 1409.
Margaret, the wife of Sir William Cunningham (II) dies, and he marries Margory Mary Stewart,
daughter of King Robert III. In September of 1413, Sir William Cunningham (II)
dies.
Between 1418-26,
William Cunningham (III), second son of Sir William Cunningham (II), becomes
perpetual Vicar of Dundonald and Canon of Glasgow. He is the ancestor of the
Cunninghams of Cunninghamhead. In 1421
Henry Cunningham, third son of Sir William Cunningham (II), fights in
the Battle of Beauge. Three years later Sir Robert Cunningham, 1st son of Sir
William Cunningham (II), gives himself as ransom for King James I. On May 21st,
1424, Sir Robert is knighted by King James I.

Sir Robert's son, Archibald Cunningham, receives Waterton. In August 1430, Sir
Robert Cunningham shares a joint commission with his wife's brother, Sir
Alexander Montgomery, to govern and defend Kintyre and Knapdale.
In 1448 Sir Alexander
Montgomery, Sir Robert Cunningham's brother-in-law, is made Bailie of
Cunninghame, a title which belonged to Sir Robert Cunningham. This event
sparked the bloody Montgomery-Cunningham
feud. In the years 1452 to 1455 Sir Alexander Cunningham, son of Sir
Robert Cunningham, helps King James II defeat the Douglas' and is granted the
Barony of Kilmaurs, and the lands of Kilmarnock, Hilton, Finlaystone and
Glencairn. His 2nd son, William Cunningham becomes ancestor of the Cunninghams
of Craigends, Robertland, Cairncurin, Bedlaw, Auchinharvie and Auchenyards. For
his service to the king, Sir Alexander Cunningham is made Bailie of Cunninghame
in 1458, frustrating the Montgomerys.
In 1460, Sir Alexander
is accused of collaborating with a traitor, but is acquitted when King James
III comes to his defense. Sir Alexander is recognized as Lord Kilmaurs by King
James III in 1462 and sits in Parliament from 1464 to 1488. In 1484, Sir
Alexander, son of Sir Robert Cunningham, officially moves the seat of Clan
Cunningham to Finlaystone. In May of 1488, Sir Alexander Cunningham is made 1st

October, King James IV revokes all titles
given by his father. Sir Alexander Cunningham's son and heir, Robert
Cunningham, is stripped of his title of
2nd Earl of Glencairn, but retains the earlier title of 2nd Lord
Kilmaurs. The Montgomerys burn down the
Cunningham's Kerelaw Castle.
Robert Cunningham, 2nd
Earl of Glencairn, sits in Parliament in 1489, but dies three years later. His
son, Cuthbert, becomes 3rd Lord Kilmaurs. Hugh of Eglinton, Lord Montgomery, is
made Bailie of Cunninghame in 1498, and in 1499 Cuthbert Cunningham, leads the
Clan in an attack on Irvine.

Lady Mariot or Marion Douglas (died after Jul 1511), eldest daughter of
Archibald, 5th Earl of Angus and Elizabeth Boyd. Cuthbert died between 23 May 1540
and May 1541.
The Dictionary of
National Biography wrongly calls Cuthbert Robert. He had a number of charters
as Lord Kilmaurs but had regained his grandfather's earldom by 1503. He tried
unsuccessfully to rescue King James V from the control of the Douglas family,
but was defeated at Linlithgow on 4 September 1526.

(2) CHARLES DAUGHERTY 1729, son of MICHAEL DAUGHERTY and CATHERINE ROGERS. He was born
1716 in Lagan Valley, Donegal , Ireland, and died July 17, 1763 in Kerr Creek,
Augusta Co Va.
Notes for REBECCA CUNNINGHAM:
The family Cunningham
take their name from the district of Cunningham in Northern Ayrshire. The land
of Kilmaurs of that area was granted by Hugo De Moreville, Constable of
Scotland to a vassel named Warnebald in the 12 th century and it is from his
descendants that the Cunningham family originate.
Cunningham is a Scottish place name that described the man
from the location near Kilarmock and first recorded in 1153 as Cunegan, a word
with Breton origins. The spelling with
-ham added it earliest know mention in 1180.
When of Irish origin, Cunningham is the Anglicized form of O'Cuinneagain
meaning descendant of Cuinneagan, a form
of Conn meaning leader, chief.
Notes for CHARLES DAUGHERTY:
born ca 1716, Lagan
Valley, Donegal, married Rebecca Cunningham(?), and was killed by Indians 17
Jul 1763, on Kerr Creek, Augusta Co., in a raid by Cornstalk's braves, on a
Sunday morning when most of the inhabitants were away at church, in what became
Rockbridge Co. Charles moved to Augusta Co. with his father from Chester Co.,
PA, by 1738, and by 1745 settled on Kerr Creek.
In 1763, William's
wife Elizabeth was a heroine in the terrible raid by Cornstalk; the Shawnees
were seen from Fort Young on Jackson River and an express was sent to William
Dougherty's, but he was away from home, so Elizabeth mounted and raced up the
Cowpasture valley warning settlers, who fled to the mountains before the
Indians arrived. The settlers of Kerr Creek were less fortunate and Charles
Dougherty, among others, was killed.
From - Annals of
Augusta County, Virginia from 1726 to 1871 by Jos. A Waddell
"The smaller band
of Indians made their descent upon Kerr's creek on the 17th of July (1763).
Their number was twenty-seven, Robert Irvin having counted them from a bluff
near the road at the head of the creek. Some weeks before, two boys, named
Telford, reported that when returning from school they had seen a naked man
near the path. This report was not much thought of till the massacre, when it
was supposed that the man seen by the boys was an Indian spy sent out to
reconnoiter....
From this point they
had a full view of the peaceful valley of Kerr's creek. Hastening down the
mountain, they began the work of indiscriminate slaughter. Coming first to the
house of Charles Daugherty, he and his whole family were murdered. They next
came to the house of Jacob Cunningham, who was gone from home, but his wife was
killed, and his daughter, about ten years of age, scalped and left for dead.
She revived, was carried off as prisoner in the second invasion, was redeemed,
and lived for forty years afterwards, but finally died from the effects of the
scalping. The Indians then proceeded to the house of Thomas Gilmore, and
he was and his wife were killed, the
other members of the family escaping at that time. The house of Robert Hamilton
came next. This family consisted of ten persons, and one-half of them were
slain. By this time the alarm had spread through the neighborhood, and the
inhabitants were flying in every direction. For some reason the main body of
the Indians went no farther..... The people on Kerr's creek had repaired the
losses...basically Indians attacked again, only there were more of them. the wife of Thomas Gilmore, standing with her
three children over the body of her husband, fought with desperation the Indian
who scalped him. She and her son, John, and two daughters, were made
prisoners....
An entire family of
Daughertys, five Hamiltons, and three Gilmores were slain....Mrs. Gilmore
struck up, with plaintive voice, the 127th Psalm of Rouse's version....The
Indians then separated into several parties, dividing the prisoners among
themselves. Mrs. Gilmore and her son, John, fell to one party and her two
daughters to another. The last she ever heard of the latter was their cries as
they were torn from her.....the mother and son were also parted, she being sold
to French traders and the boy retained by the Shawnees. Finally he was redeemed
and brought back by Jacob Warwick to Jackson's river where he remained till his
mother's return."
Long before any white
man had explored the entire Kentucky area, it was claimed by Virginia as part
of her Augusta County. Daniel Boone brought his family to Kentucky in 1773;
established the first permanent settlement in Kentucky at Harrodsburg in 1774,
and a year later founded Boonesboro. That same year, 1775, John Daugherty, the
first of the family in Kentucky, came to the area a few miles from Boonesboro
which would become Lincoln County.

Our part of the
Daugherty migration to Kentucky was the second wave, descendants of Charles
Daugherty and wife Rebecca in the 1780s, ten years after his brother Michael
Daugherty II's sons. After Charles was killed by Indians in Augusta Co., VA in
1763, his widow and children remained there about ten years before some moved
west into Kentucky.
Charles and Rebecca's
son Cornelius, born ca 1729 probably in Pennsylvania, was a weaver who
immigrated with his father and grandfather to Augusta Co. from Chester Co., PA
in 1738. Cornelius served in Capt. George Robinson's company of militia in
1742. From 1742-49 Cornelius and his wife (1) Mary Hill lived on Cedar Creek on
the North fork of the Roanoke in Augusta Co. They had, according to one book,
six sons and six daughters, but not all their names are known; only George H.,
Noble, Ann, William, Isabel, Christopher, Abraham, Robert, Alexander, and
Thomas Daugherty. Mary Hill died and Cornelius married about 1770 (2) Agnes
_____. They had William, James Hill, John, and Cornelius R., Jr.
Charles Daugherty had,
besides Cornelius, William, Thomas, and David, a son Daniel who in 1779
operated an iron works on Irish Creek of South River, Augusta Co., VA, not far
from brother David's Mill Creek farm. Other brothers were Anthony, who died in
1792, Rockbridge Co., VA, and James who acted as Anthony's executor. The first
tax list of the new Rockbridge Co. (taken out of Augusta) in 1778 listed James,
William, and George Daugherty. In 1782 James, Anthony, William and Thomas were
on the list. James started an iron works in Wythe Co., VA 1783-90, and is said
to have died there in 1799.
Between 1755 and 1756,
CHARLES served in the Augusta Co. militia during the French and Indian war. In
Jul 1763, CHARLES was killed by Indians in a raid by Cornstalk's braves on Kerr
Creek, on a Sunday morning when most of the

County, Va, daughter of JOHN HOUSTON II.
She was born Abt. 1725 in Augusta County, Va, and died Bef. 1799.
Notes for DAVID
TRIMBLE:
1. David Trimble immigrated to America Abt. 1730
from Armagh County, Ireland.
2. David TRIMBLE, born Abt. 1720 in Scotland;
died 1799 in Bourbon Co., KY. He was the
son of John TRIMBLE. He married Mary
HOUSTON 1746 in Augusta Co., VA. Mary
HOUSTON, born Abt. 1725 in Augusta Co., VA; died Bef. 1799.
3. He was one of five brothers coming to
America from Scotland by way of Armagh County, Ireland in the early 1730's. Settled first in New Castle, PA. David's wife was a Houston. We can find no court records of his marriage,
but there was an old letter, written by his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, in
which she said her Mother was a Houston. Also Gen. Sam Houston studied Law
under James Trimble, a great-nephew of David., from Nashville, TN. Gen. Houston described James as a
"Kinsman". The Houston's and
Trimble's lived on neighboring plantations in VA, the birthplace of Gen. Sam
Houston. MacLysaght says TRIMBLE is an
English surname found as early as 1659 in Ulster.

Virginia, Volume I, COUNTY COURT JUDGEMENTS
4. David and his brother Moses are reported by
Martha (Grigsby) Trimble in her letter of 1845 to have "moved westward and
settled in KY or Tennessee."
5. David lived on waters of Middle River in
Augusta County, VA; died in 1799 in Bourbon County, Ky, where his will dated
September 6, 1798 was recorded June
1799.
6. The first time David was mentioned in the
Augusta County, VA records was when he was named as a tithable for road duty
along with Walter, James and John Trimble.
7. He witnessed a deed in Augusta County in
1745 and was a land owner in 1746. On
August 2, 1747 his son James was baptized by Rev. Craig. A David Trimble, possibly this David Trimble
is mentioned in the Augusta County records as follows:
March 1757 (B)
Henderson vs.
Calvin.--James Calvin, James Trimble, William Trimble, David Trimble, all of
New Castle, Province of Pennsylvania.
Bond to Valentine Henderson of Belfast, County of Antrim. Dated 27th
September, 1740. Henderson died during the progress of the suit. In deeds recorded in 1788 in Augusta County,
VA, John Trimble and wife Margaret and David Trimble sold land on Middle
River. This was apparently their place
of residence. David moved to Kentucky in
1797.
8. Like his brother James, David was a
surveyor and was appointed on May 18, 1773, as deputy surveyor of Augusta Co.,
VA. He was a large landowner in the
Valley of Virginia, both at the Forks-of-James, east of Lexington, VA and on
Middle River, this being his home plantation.
Just after the Rev. War, when his sons migrated to Kentucky around the
Montgomery County area, David made the move with them. At this time John, James and Moses were
already deceased, also David's wife.
This probably accounted for his decision to move from his home in VA to
the Kentucky area. His will is recorded
at the Bourbon County, Kentucky, Courthouse.
It appears that David and James were the closer of the Five Trimble
Brothers as their names appear together frequently on documents recorded in the
Virginia valley. This close tie could
have been due to them having the same profession of surveying.
9. 31 Oct. 1765 - received 300 acres in
Augusta Co. at the fork of the James River.
16 March 1771 - additional 140 acres
adjoining his own land.
1 Feb. 1781 - additional 110 acres
adjoining his land.

Bourbon County, KY and is shown below:

Two of William Alkire's
brothers, John & George Alkire as well as Fergus Graham were at the Cane
Ridge Protracted Meeting in 1801, held under the auspices of Barton Warren
Stone. Later the three mentioned
were Christian,
sometimes called "New Light" Preachers. George Alkire invited his
good friend Stone up to OH to begin the church at the Deer Creek
settlement. George & Fergus,
neighbors, held an annual protracted meeting, and Fergus always donated a beef
critter roasted on a spit, to help feed the multitudes. Certainly Fergus' descendants were active in
the Christian Church, and as Humphries, in his Lives of Deceased Christian
Ministers says, "Pity the poor Trinitarian who wandered into their
camp!" (I believe that would include the Anglicans)! These men were part of the backbone of the
restoration movement.
