Bradninch. Earlier records were destroyed in a fire that partially destroyed
the church about 1660. John Downynge's widow (name unknown) was buried August
2, 1623. Historical Note: John Downynge was born during the reign of Henry
VIII. One source note in the files indicates he served as Mayor of Bradninch in
1555. NOTE: It is likely that the birth and death dates for John and his
descendants in Devonshire indicate baptism and burial dates as these were from
church records.

Devonshire Downings" prepared by John Perot, Ardmore, Pennsylvania, put
together fro the entries in the parish records of Bradninch, Devonshire,
England, in 1901 an 1903: "Thomas Downing, son of Thomas Downing, born
December 14, 1691, and was baptized January 6, 1691/2, at Bradninch. The
Bradninch records show that a Thomas Downing married Judeth Bending on 2 Jun
1717. Judeth, wife of Thomas Downing, was buried 26 Jan 1723. According to the
Downingtown records, 'his first wife was said to have been named Ellen, and his
second Tomazine, who was perhaps the mother to all his children. On Dec 1756 he
married Jane Alborne (o Albin).' There seems to be some error here, unless he
had two wives before Tomazine; Ellen and Judeth. Thomas Downing came to
Pennsylvania before 1718, where he was taxed in Concord township from 1718 to
1732; later moving to Downingtown, where he died age 81. The Downingtown
records says that two of hi children were born in England and the Bradninch
records show the births of a Thomasine (1715) and Thomas (1717)." Notes of
contributor Sandra K. Farney: "He was a founder of Downingtown,
Pennsylvania, a Welsh settlement. He settled on the east branch of Brandywine
Creek and was a farmer, miller, and merchant. He was a Friend (Quaker) and was
a member of the Falls, Birmingham, Wilmington, & Baltimore Friends
Meetings." From "History of Chester County", page 525:
"There is reason to think that while in concord he operated a mill
belonging to Nathaniel Newlin, and he and his descendants continued to be
mill-owners at Downingtown for several generations."
Thomas and Thomazine,
by that time, had accepted the Quaker faith of William Penn, but experienced
significant religious animosity among their Devonshire neighbors. That, along
with differences with the Crown (aftereffects of the "Monmouth
Rebellion" in 1685) convinced Thomas to leave England with his wife and
child for PennŁus colonies in Pennsylvania.
What ship the family
sailed on has not been found, but they arrived in Philadelphia in late 1717,
and immediately removed west of there into Chester county, Pennsylvania,
settling on land along the east branch of the Brandywine River.
Thomas quickly built
and established a mill on the Brandywine, perhaps jointly with another early
Chester county settler, Nathaniel Newlin. The mill remained in the family
possession for several generations. Thomas and Thomazine became members of the
Falls, Birmingham, Wilmington, and Baltimore Friends (Quaker) Meeting. For
this, his descendants are fortunate, as the Quakers - much as the Mormons -
documented their family histories closely.
The child who sailed
with them from England, Thomas, died in 1736, but eight other children were
born of the marriage after arrival in Pennsylvania.
Futhey and Cope,
"History of Chester County", p. 525" "DOWNING, Thomas, born
in Bradnich, in Devonshire, England, Dec. 14, 1691, married, first, Ellen ----,
and, second, Thomazine ----, who was perhaps the mother of all the children, two
of whom were born in England. He was a taxable in Concord township from 1718 to
1732. At Concord Monthly Meeting, 6, 3, 1730, 'Thomas Downing & his wife
made application to this meeting to com under the care of friends; they have
produced papers from under severall friends hands of their sober and orderly
conversatons where they have Lived, this meeting receiveth them.' In 1733 they
removed to Sadsbury, but in two or three years after settled a the place since
known as Downingtown. Thomas married a third wife, Jane Algin, widow of James,
and daughter of John and Mary Edge, 12, 15 1756. She was a minister and died 1,
23, 1759. He died 1, 15, 1772. there is reason to think that while in Concord
he operated a mill belonging to Nathaniel Newlin, and he and his descendants
continued to be mill-owners at Downingtown for several generations."\

Downingtown is a
borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 33 miles (53 km) west of Philadelphia.
Downingtown has been in existence since the early 18th century and has a number
of historic buildings and structures. The town was originally named Milltown
due to its number of mills along the Brandywine Creek, the first of which was
founded by Thomas Moore. The Bicking family also had paper mills in the area,
with Frederick Bicking from Winterburg, Germany, being the patriarch of the
Bicking paper families.
Around the time of the
American Revolution, Milltown became more commonly known as Downing's Town because
Thomas Downing, a 1717 Quaker immigrant from Bradninch, Devon, England, owned a
number of those mills. The town's name officially became Downingtown in 1812.
The east branch Brandywine Creek runs through the middle of the town. The town
is located along US route 30 which runs from the East Coast to the West Coast,
and was an early westward road in the wagon days as the Philadelphia and
Lancaster Turnpike. This was the first paved road to cross the nation from
Atlantic to Pacific. The Pennsylvania Turnpike started construction in the
early 1940s and was completed in the early 1950s; it runs north of US 30
bypassing Downingtown. The famous Irish patriot and martyr Theobald Wolfe Tone
briefly lived here. President Lincoln's funeral train passed through Downingtown.
The 1958 movie, The Blob, was filmed in and around Downingtown and in fact, the
diner in that movie is actually called the "Downingtown Diner" now
named "Chef's Diner". [1].
Downingtown is known
for its history. The Downingtown Log House was built about 1705 by John
Hickman. In 1713 Hickman sold the 1½ story, 21' 9" × 25' structure to
Thomas Moore and his wife Mary. Thomas Moore moved from the Log House in 1729
and died in 1738. Thomas Downing acquired the Log House in 1739. It remained in
the Downing family until 1940 when Thomas W. Downing died and left it to the
Borough of Downingtown. The Borough did some restoration work to the Log House
in 1947. It served as home to the Downingtown Chamber of Commerce from 1950
until 1988. But the Log House was deteriorating. It was 18 inches below street
level causing water damage due to run off from Route 30, and being within feet
of the road, vibration from traffic was slowly taking its toll. From 1988 until
1990 The Downingtown Historical Society did an extensive restoration and
relocation of the Log House with money raised for the project. It now sits
approx. 70 feet west of its original location, 22 feet from the Route 30 side
walk, and slightly above street level. [2]
The center of
Downingtown has recently undergone some widespread and continuing renovation,
particularly to the streetscape and many of the commercial buildings. There has
also been residential development on recovered industrial lands in the
southeastern part of the borough. Downingtown is home to some large regional
and national businesses, including DNB(Downingtown National Bank), First
National Bank of Chester County and Victory Brewing Company. In 1988, a stall
in its farmer's market was the first place pretzels were sold by the founders
of Auntie Anne's, now a global company with 1,000 stores and $375 million in
annual sales. [3]

"Fishing Creek
Presbyterian Church was organized about 1770. Its first bench of elders
consisted of Samuel Neely, John Latta, Robert Walker and Robert Lusk. The Rev.
John Simpson (1740-15Feb1808) of New Jersey was ordained and installed as
pastor on 6Apr1774. He served the church until 1790 when he removed to
Pendleton District, South Carolina. During the War for independence he was an
active supporter of the patriot cause. On Saturday, June 10, 1780, Col. George
Trunbull, the British Commander at Rocky Mount, S. C. sent Captain Christian
Huck and a party of horsemen on a scout up Fishing Creek. When they kindled the
fire that destroyed the home of Rev. John Simpson, Huck's co-horts Burrel and
Jeremiah Burge carried off the bedclothes and other household articles, they
ignited a torch of freedom that burned in the breasts of the minister and his
congregation. His church at Fishing Creek became the rallying point of patriot
resistance. Here gathered the McClures, Gastons, Gills, Walkkers, Coopers,
Kelseys, Porters and their like, and formed themselves into companies under
Captains John McClure, Alexander Pagan, Lieutenants John Mills and Robert
Cooper and joined General Thomas Sumter's partisan army."

"John served in
the South Carolina militia during the Revolution. "John Downing served in
the militia under Lt. Thomas Black and Col. Neel and was in the Briar Creek
Expedition. From 1 Nov to 21 Dec. 1780, he served as a quartermaster under
Capt. Mills at Lacy's Fort. In June of 1781, he was under Captain Hugh Knox at
Congaree Fort and in Nov. 1781, he was a quartermaster under a Lt. Kelley at
Orangeburg. He served under Lt. Archibald Gill during 1782 and was at Four
Holes and Fork of Edisto". Based on supporting documents , a collection of
claims for provisions and services made to the legislature after the war, it
appears that John served as a quartermaster, a horseman, a footman, and a
soldier during 196 days of total service in five separate
"campaigns.""

active supporter of the patriot cause. On Saturday, June 10, 1780, Col. George
Trunbull, the British Commander at Rocky Mount, S. C. sent Captain Christian
Huck and a party of horsemen on a scout up Fishing Creek. When they kindled the
fire that destroyed the home of Rev. John Simpson, Huck's co-horts Burrel and Jeremiah
Burge carried off the bedclothes and other household articles, they ignited a
torch of freedom that burned in the breasts of the minister and his
congregation.

Archibald Gill during 1782 and was at Four Holes
and Fork of Edisto". Based on supporting documents , a collection of
claims for provisions and services made to the legislature after the war, it
appears that John served as a quartermaster, a horseman, a footman, and a
soldier during 196 days of total service in five separate
"campaigns.""

Mary Pagan, born about
1746, probably in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Died in Chester County, South
Carolina 19 March 1832 and is buried at Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church
Cemetery.
Mary Pagan was born
near the communities of Paquea and Martic Forge in the beautiful Susquehanna
River valley of Pennsylvania. Her father Andrew named his farm "Pagan's
Fancy". The Pagans were Scots-Irish Presbyterians, emigrants from Ulster.
Mary married John Downing on 13 March 1764 in Lancaster, PA. We do not have
documents to confirm John's origin, but I like to think he was a recent arrival
from Ulster - perhaps invited to Pagan's Fancy through correspondence with old
friends in Ulster. Their first child, Elizabeth, arrived the next year, and as
was the pattern in those days John, Mary and Elizabeth moved to land that they
could call their own here in the Carolinas.

9. MARGARET "PEGGY"9 DOWNING (JOHN8, WILLIAM7, THOMAS6, THOMAS (DOENYNGE)5, EDWARD4, JOHN3 DOWNYNGE, THOMAS2, JOHN1) was born
1758, and died 1826 in Garrard Co. Ky.
She married JONATHAN JENKINS 1774 in VA, son of WILLIAM JENKINS. He was born April 23, 1753 in Va, and died
1830.
Notes for JONATHAN JENKINS:
Jonathon Jenkins and
Margaret. who was born in Virginia . they came to Mercer co KY around 1790
Jonathan Jenkins lived
in Garrard Co, Ky in plain view of High Bridge.
He was a farmer.
Jonathan was probably
a rev War soldier. He was one of the
first people in Garrard county High Bridge area. He owned around 750 acres.
When Jonathan Jenkins
died around 1831 or 1835 his heirs included: Abel Jenkins(son)
Susan downing (Grand
Daughter) & Hiram Dickerson (husband
) John Jenkins (son) sold his
shares to Dickerson. William Jenkins
(son) David Jenkins and Wife Patsy
Alfred Jenkins, Stephen Jenkins (son)
m Polly Curd. when they died left only child Lucy M
Jenkins, Susannah (Susan ) daughter.
JONATHAN JENKINS, Sr.
was born about 1752 in Virginia. He came to Kentucky with his wife, Margaret
and their ten children, and settled in Mercer County. He first appeared in
Kentucky records on February 18, 1790 when he purchased 69 acres of land in
Mercer County. Over the next ten years or so Jonathan continued to make land
purchases in Mercer County. In March of 1804, Jonathan sold 120 acres of land
in Mercer on the waters of Dry Fork a branch of the Salt River. On July 2, 1804
Jonathan and Margaret Jenkins purchased 315 acres of land on Dix River in
Garrard County, Kentucky and remained there until their deaths. ABEL JENKINS,
Sr., son of Jonathan, Sr. and Margaret Jenkins, was born about 1779. He married
Elizabeth Tracy, daughter of George Tracy, Sr. on March 25, 1805 in Garrard
County, Kentucky. Seven sons and three daughters were born to this union. In
late summer of 1833, Abel and Elizabeth moved their family to Franklin County
and settled on 260 acres of land on Benson Creek. All of their children married
and lived their lives in the Franklin and Shelby County area, except Thomas,
who married Martha A. Miller and migrated west, eventually into Iowa where he
died. Morgan married Jane Edwards; John married Eliza Parrent; Stephen married
Mary Bailey; Abel, Jr. married Susan Scott Samples; William married Anna
Scroggin; Ephraim married Margaret Baker; Mary married James C. Blythe; Martha
married William Lowens and Julia Ann married George W. Sacra. Many of their
descendants remain in this county today. Jonathon Jenkins ... He passed away in
1830. [1]
Jonathan may have
re-married in the 1820's (when he was in his seventies) to a woman named Ann.
He also owned a 750 acre piece in "plain view of Highbridge." This
would place the land somewhere along the Kentucky River in either Mercer County
[most likely] or Jessamine County, KY

deposed that he had talked with Jonathan Jenkins in a professional capacity as
a lawyer from 1822 to about 1828 and found him much disturbed after losing his
son---even thought to be deranged but after this period he thought Jonathan was
alright. He says he was never tried for this condition but a trustee or
committee was appointed for him.
" John J. Crittenden attended to a suit in
the Court of Appeals. William Downing, administrator , went to Frankfort to attend
to same. Downing says that Abel Jenkins was appointed to super intend Jenkins
affairs.
" A.R. McKee states that Jonathan Jenkins
had given all his other children as they left home $4 00. except John and in
the note to John he added $400 for the inconvenience of moving from Louisana to
live with him and the court upheld the note for $800. This was done long before
Jen kins had a committee appointed for him. John Jenkins, son of Jonathan, was
living in Opolusc a Louisana and was asked by his father to come with his wife
and live with him in KY. John did but soon was convinced his father could not
have him live with him longer because of jealousy of some of the brothers. The
old man agreed to give him a $800 note because of the inconvenience he had caused
him. Jonathan Jenkins managed this deal very well. Sworn to by A.R. McKee at
Garnet's Tavern in Covington, KY. on 7 Mar 1835. McKee had drawn up the note.
" William Downing acted as committee for
Jenkins from 26 Sep 1826 to Aug 1830. William Downing bought John Jenkins share
of a note for $800 and a negro who he thought was worth $200. H e did not
