Descendants of Mr. Floyd
Generation No. 1
1. MR.1 FLOYD was born 1700 in Ireland, and died Aft. 1735. He married UNKNOWN.
Children of MR. FLOYD and UNKNOWN are:
2. i. MATTHEW2 FLOYD, b. 1729,
Ireland.
ii. WILLIAM FLOYD, b. 1731.
3. iii. DAVID H FLOYD, b. 1735; d. December 12, 1788, Lincoln Co.
Generation No. 2
2. MATTHEW2 FLOYD (MR.1) was born 1729 in Ireland. He married SARAH UNKNOWN.
Notes for MATTHEW FLOYD:
Col. Matthew Floyd,
came to America in command of a regiment of British soldiers, in time of the
Revolutionary War. Being in sympathy
with the cause of the Colonists, he succeeded in winning his regiment to his
views, during the voyage across the ocean.
Accordingly, on landing at Charleston, South Carolina, he, with his
entire command, entered the service of the United Colonies, and fought on the
side of American independence, during the War.
In the Memorials
(Affadvits) dated 11 Oct 1784 and May 11 1786, that Matthew made for his claims
against the British for his Loyalist Services, he stated "that he was a
native of Ireland, and that about 40 years ago, he left there at the age of 17
and came to America in Pennsylvania and by 1774 he was settled in South Carolina
as a Planter upon his own Estate.".1
Matthew was given 11
land grants by the Governor of North Carolina between the period of 28 Feb 1755
to 29 Apr 1768 for a total of 2577 acres at which time was supposedly Anson and
Mecklinburg Co's. This was a disputed area because of the division line of NC
and SC along with the Indian Land. This is a description of each of the land
grants.
Matthew must have been
in the North Carolina Militia as there are Public Claim hearings of North
Carolina at New Bern on 1 May 1760 that a Lt. Matthew Floyd and his company
were payed 126 pounds 3 shillings 8 pence for services for fighting Cherokee
Indians Oct 1759.3
Matthew was a Justice
of the Peace for the County of Meklinburgh, NC as at a Council held by the
Governor 31 December 1762 ordered that a "Commission of Peace and
'Dedimus'" be issued to Matthew Floyd.4
Matthew played a brief
but promient part in the actions at Ninety-Six Ddistrict South Carolina in the
autumn of 1775. The leaders of the loyalists and the whigs made a treaty on
November 22 at Ninety-Six courthouse, one of the provisions being that the
loyalists should consult Governor Lord William Campbell, then a fugitive on
board a man-of-war, about the settlement of the public differences, while the
whigs consulted the Council of Safety at Charlestown. Matthew was chosen as the
messenger sent by Major Robinson to Lord William Campbell under the terms of
the treaty. He arrived in Charlestown and applied to the Council of Safety for
permission to repair to his Lordship on board the British man-of-war, declaring
that he had lost his dispatches, and therefore it was necessary he should
himself give his Excellency accounts of the transaction at Ninety-Six. This
story of the loss of his dispatches naturally created suspicion, and the
Council of Safety in allowing him to go to his Excellency required that he
should be accompanied by one Mr. Merchant on the part of the Council, who was
required to be present at any interview and conversation between Lord William
and Floyd. But not withstanding Mr. Merchant's remonstrance, as soon as Floyd
was on board, Lord William took him down into his cabin, where, with Innes his
secretary, they had a private interview; and upon it conclusion Innes informed
Mr. Merchant that his Lordship desired he would return and inform those who had
sent him that Floyd was a messenger from a friend of the government and must be
detained until his Lordship had determined on his answer. Upon this the
Council, indignant at the conduct of the Governor, issued an order for the
arrst of Floyd upon his landing from the man-of-war; and, accordingly, two days
after, upon his attempting secretly to pass through the town at night, he was
seized and taken before the body. There he was examined, and it was drawn from
him that Lord William had directed him to tell those who sent him "to do
everything they could for the best advantage - that he did not desire any
effusion of blood, but whatever they should do would meet with his
concurrence." A weaker and more mischievious message it's difficult to
conceive; but surely the Council having received the messenger sent by the
King's friends under a treaty made by Williamson and Mayson their officers,
good faith demanded that he should be allowed to return and deliver his
Lordship's message, whether that message was for peace or war. But the Council
took a different view and put Floyd in Jail.9,10
In the year 1775
Matthew was Capt. of Militia in Camden District and Justice of the Peace. He
was also taken prisoner in that year and close confined for about 3 months on
account of his having carried intelligence to Lord William Campbell. He took an
oath, in order to release himself from his confinement, not to take up arms
against the Americans.11,12
Matthew continued to
serve with Lord Cornwallis until the surrender of Charlestown by the British.
He then went to East Florida, where he first applied for restitution for his
losses, but it seems his papers never arrived in London.
Matthew must have
acquired some land and furnishings in East Florida as in a witnessing
deposition for the claim of Alexander Paterson for compensation as a Loyalist,
Matthew mentions that he had to ride over Alexander's Plantation on the
Mantonze River (near St. Augustine) in order to get to his own Plantation
twenty miles further south.13
On 9 March 1781 at
Camden District, South Carolina, Matthew and his wife Sarah sold to Abraham
Floyd (son) the 155 acres of land that was Matthew's last land grant by North
Carolina 29 Apr 1768, which by this time was to be in the Camden District of
South Carolina. This was to be the last piece of land he sold before he was
declared a Loyalist and had all his deeds, papers, land, and furnishings
confiscated and sold.14
When in late 1783,
England gave East Florida back to Spain, Matthew decided to go back to England
where he arrived the first of October 1784. Here he found out that his claims
for restitution never arrived at the Public Claims Court. He obtained a lawyer
and began the process again. He produced papers and memorials from people that
had known him as a plantation owner in the Carolinas and for his actions
against the "Rebels", including statement from Lord Cornwallis.
Matthew made claim for
losses of : Sterling 1. 2300 acres of land Camden District, SC 2300 00
2. 7 negro men and 2
women 450 00
3. 9 horses, 45
cattle, 27 sheep, 54 hogs and poultry 143 05
4. Household furniture
and farming utinsels 60 00
5. Money due on Bonds
and notes 125 13
Total 3078 18
In his petition for
restitution he also made statement that he was "single" in England,
but that he had two children in America that required his support. The Public
Claims Court awarded him an Allowance of 25 pounds a year from the 10th day of
October 1784.
On 4 June 1787 he left
a note a the Court "I called during the recess to acquaint the Board of my
being to sail in a few days for Nova Scotia where I propose to settle, and have
to request that my annual subsistances may be continued to be paid to my
attorney W. John Simpson of London. As I am to go on board tomorrow, hope the
necessity of the case will excuse this mode of application, I am with great
respect.".1
I have found no record
of Matthew leaving England or entering Nova Scotia at the time he stated in the
English Public Record Office files. He might have left on a boat under another
name.
I also believe that he
returned to America prior to 1796. Going back in time before Revolutionary War,
Matthew was listed on the Camden District, South Carlina tax records along with
a William Floyd in 1778, William was still listed on tax records in 1780 and in
1783 Matthew was on the confiscation list of South Carolina.
On the tax records in
Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1796 there are William and Matthew Floyd with a
David Floyd Sr. who had been on the tax lists since 1787 and had came from
Virginia. David died in 1788, but his family stayed in the area.
Matthew was only on
the tax list for the year 1796, but William was on it until 1799. Abraham Floyd
Sr. appeared on the tax list for Madison Co., Kentucky in 1796 and a Jonathan
Floyd appeared 1797. Abraham's son Matthew was not old enough to be on tax
lists until 1800.
Children of MATTHEW FLOYD and SARAH UNKNOWN are:
4. i. ABRAHAM3 FLOYD, b. May 10,
1755, Camden Dist, South Carolina; d. 1844, Floyd Co, IN.
5. ii. CATHERINE FLOYD, b. 1760; d. Aft. 1799.
iii. MAJERY FLOYD, b. 1769; d. Aft. 1792; m. JAMES ADKINS, October 18,
1792, burke co. North Carolina; b. Abt. 1774.
Notes for MAJERY FLOYD:
Marjery Floyd (2032)
was born circa 1769. She married James Adkins (1805) on 18 October 1792 at
Burke Co., North Carolina, and the bond listed Mathew Floyd as the father of
Marjery, and the witnesses being Abraham and Eve Floyd (Julian), it is no doubt
that Marjery is the daughter of Matthew and sister of Abraham Floyd. If she was
18 years old when she was married, this would put her birth about 1774. Maybe
this is one of the children Matthew mentioned in his memoralist
statements.15,16
In 1810, James and
Marjery were residents of Pulaski Co., Kentucky, at the time of the Census they
appeared in Madison County, Kentucky about the same time as Abraham Sr. and his
family.17
In 1830, James and
Marjery were residents of Pulaski Co., Kentucky, at the time of the Census and
there were nine others in household which probably were their children; two
boys age 10-15 and one age 15-20 and two girls under 5 years, two between age
5-10 and one between 10-15 years.18
iv. ELIZABETH FLOYD, b. Abt. 1775; d. Aft. 1796; m. JEREMIAH BROWN; b. Abt.
1774.
Notes for ELIZABETH FLOYD:
Harl Williams in an
E-Mail said that when he visited the grave of Jeremiah Brown at the new Hope
Cemetery in Overton Co., TN the caretaker showed him a letter from Edna Bond
Ripley. Part of the letter contained;
"Jeremiah married
Elizabeth Floyd in Burke Co., NC - no exact date or place. Elizabeth's brother
Abraham, who was also a Revolutionary War vet from SC, lived near the Browns in
Burke Co. Abraham also lived near a Charles Brown but there is no concrete
evidence as to any relation. Elizabeth's and Abraham's father was Matthew
Floyd. He settled in SC before the Indian Wars. Matthew was a Tory from Ireland
and the patriots confiscated his lands and property. He fled to Florida and
then to England."19
3. DAVID H2
FLOYD (MR.1) was born 1735, and died December 12, 1788 in Lincoln
Co. He married SARAH DAVIS, daughter of
ROBERT
DAVIS. She was born 1739, and died Aft. 1770.
Children of DAVID FLOYD and SARAH DAVIS are:
6. i. SALLY3 FLOYD, b. 1750, VA;
d. September 1787, KY.
7. ii. JOHN FLOYD, b. 1752; d. 1840.
iii. GEORGE FLOYD, b. 1755.
8. iv. BENJAMIN FLOYD, b. 1760; d. 1837.
v. DAVID FLOYD, b. 1758; m. CATY BURDETTE, December 22, 1790.
vi. SALLIE FLOYD, b. 1761.
vii. MARY POLY FLOYD, b. 1768; m. JOHN BERNELL, May 08, 1788, Lincoln Co.
viii. GRACY FLOYD, b. 1767, VA; d. August 09, 1843, Lincoln; m. JOSHUA BURDETTE, February
26, 1790.
Generation No. 3
4. ABRAHAM3 FLOYD (MATTHEW2, MR.1) was born
May 10, 1755 in Camden Dist, South Carolina, and died 1844 in Floyd Co,
IN. He married EVE JULIAN, daughter
of CATHERINE JULIAN. She was born
Abt. 1755, and died Aft. 1807.
Notes for ABRAHAM FLOYD:
, Abraham, who, as was
his father, was a native of Ireland, came to America in command of a company in
his father's regiment, and continued in the service of the Colonies, during
their struggle for liberty. After the
close of the War, Captain Floyd moved to Madison county, Kentucky, where he
followed the occupation of school teaching.
He finally moved to Indiana, where he died at the age of 104 years.
1784 - Resident of
Berke County, NC; stated in his pension application that he had moved from
Camden District, NC

Hill vs. Abraham Floyd, declares on oath that he purchased the two tracts of
land from said Floyd, of which he owes about L 58 Sterling, and at the time he
gave the Bond for the said balance, Floyd requested the Bond be made payable to
Catherine Julian, said Floyd's mother-in-law, and that he believes it was to be
paid to her in trust for the said Floyd.
July 1786 Mecklenberg
Co, NC Col. William Hil charged Abraham Floyd with trespass. Hugh Quinn,
garnishee, declared that he gave a bond to Catherine Julian, Floyd's
mother-in-law, which he believed was to pay to her in trust for said Floyd,
that he owes thereby about L 58 Sterling. Catherine Julian interpleads and
claims said money, whereupon the court orders a Jury to try. Same Jury
impaneled and sworn. Jury finds that the money made payable to the said
Catherine Julian was through fraud and in trust for the said Floyd, and ought
to be liable to the demand of the said Hill, and assess his damage agreeable to
the Declaration to be levied of the property of said Hugh Quinn.
1 Dec 1788 Berke Co,
NC - Abraham sold 40 acres on Sunnano River between Fletchell's and land

certificate it is assigned by Benjamin Floyd to Abraham Floyd, Sr. Drant issued
to Abraham Floyd 19 Sep 1825 on above Land Warrant.
9 May 1834 - Decatur
County, IN - Abraham applied for pension and pension issued 9 May 1834,
commencing 4 Mar 1831 for $35.55 per month for his service during the
Revolutionary War in the South Carolina Troops. South Carolina Volunteers 31
Mar 1776 to Oct 1776 and the US Army from Feb 1777 to Jul 1779. Stated in his
pension application that he was born in Cambridge, SC 10 May 1755. States that
he remembers this as his parents had told him but does not mention parents by
name.
21 Mar 1776 - Abraham
volunteered in Camden District of SC, served as Private in Capt. William Byer's
and Lt.Jacob Barnett. Joined regiment of volunteers at Camden under Col. Thomas
Neil and the body of volunteers under command of Gen. Williamson. Marched from
Camden District to the Cherokee Indian Nation and involved in several
skirmishes and an engagement with the savages at Black Hole on the French Broad
River.
Oct 1776 - Dismissed
from service and returned to Camden, SC.
Feb 1777 - marched
from Camden District to Augusta, GA and from there to Brier Creek, where he
joined the American Army under General Ash. In battle again under Gen. Provost
against British at Brier Creek, where he was taken prisoner by the British and
taken to Savannah, GA, from which place he escaped about July 1779 and returned
home to Camden, SC. Also stated he moved from Camden, SC to Berke Co, CN 1784
then to Madison Co, KY 1801. Then moved to Decatur Co, IN 1828. (He shows up in
Madison Co , KY Tax Records by 1796). In a letter from the General Accounting
Office to Mrs. Roscoe C. O'Byrne of 5 Dec 1843 and 4 Mar 1844, last pension was
paid at Indiana Pension Agency, Madison, IN on 6 Mar 1844 to Thomas Wilson, as
attorney fro the pensioner. Thomas Wilson was married to Margaret, Abraham's
daughter. On 5 Mar 1844, Abraham had certified that he had resided in Floyd Co,
IN for 2 months and previous to that in Bartholomew County. Abraham has been
found in all census records except for 1830. But he must have been living in
Decatur County, IN in 1834 - this was where he applied for pension. His
statement about living in Barhtolomew County prior to Floyd County, is probably
an error on his part, as he was in Brown County in 1840 as listed in census,
and Brown Co was formed from Bartholomew, Jackson and Monroe Counties in 1836.
Whwere he and his son John were living was part of Bartholomew Co when they
formed Brown Co, IN.
1840 Census Brown
County, Indiana - Abraham was living alone as a Revolutionary War Pensioner.
Abraham Floyd Sr.
(2029) (Matthew1) was born on 10 May 1755 at Camden District, South Carolina.20
He married Eve Julian (2030) at an unknown date South Carolina.21 He died in
March 1844 at Floyd Co., Indiana.22,23 It is presumed that Abraham is buried in
Floyd County, IN as this is where he died and his last pension check was issued
there.24
Sometime between
1783-1785 in Burke Co., North Carolina, Abraham and Eve sold to William Julian,
50 acres on both sides of Crooked Creek of Catawba River, joining own land on
north including house he lives in and some clear land and a spring for
complement. Entry was undated, but was in the section between the above
dates.25
Abraham resided in
1784 at Burke Co., North Carolina, he had stated in his pension application that
he had moved from Camden District, South Carolina at this time.
In the April 1786
Court Session of Mecklenburg Co., NC, Hugh Quinn, summoned as Garnishee in an
action on Attachment Colo Hill vs. Abraham Floyd, declares on oath that he
purchased two tracts of land from said Floyd, of which he owes about £50
sterling, and at the time he gave the Bond for the said Ball'ce, Floyd requested
the Bond to be made payable to Catharine Julian, said Floyd's mother-in-law,
and that he belives it was to be paid to her in trust for said Floyd.
On July 1786 at
Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, Deed of Sale from Abraham Floyd and wife to
Hugh Quinn, 155 acres dated 4 Oct 1785 proven.26
In July 1786 at
Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, In a court document of Colo Wm Hill vs.
Abraham Floyd. Trespass. Hugh Quinn, garnishee, declared that he gave a Bond to
Catherine Julian, Floyd's mother-in-law, which he belived was to pay her in
trust for said Floyd, that he owes thereby about £50 Sterling. Catharine Julian
interpleads and claims said money, whereupon the Court orders a Jury to try.
Same Jury impanneled and sworn. Jury find that the money made payable to the
s'd Catharine Julian was through fraud and in trust for the said Floyd, and
ought to be liable to the demand of the said Hill, and assess his damage
agreable to the declaration to be levied of the property of s'd Quinn.27
On the Estate Papers
for a Samuel Brown 18 April 1787, Abraham was listed as one the Adm. Bondsman
along with Susanah Brown, Thomas Brown and John Carson in Burke Co., North
Carolina.28
On 1 December 1788 at
Burke Co., North Carolina, Abraham sold 40 acres on Suannano River between
Fletchells and land claimed by William Davidson, Sr. Warrant was issued.29
In 1790, Abraham was a
resident of Burke Co., North Carolina, at the time of the Census but it seems
that Abraham's last name had been mis-spelled on the Census Record and it came
out Abram Flord. Had listed on it 1 male under 16, 3 over 16 and 2 females.30
In 1800, Abraham was a
resident of Madison Co., Kentucky, at the time of the Census.31
In 1810, Abraham was a
resident of Pulaski Co., Kentucky, at the time of the Census.32
In 1820, Abraham was a
resident of Pulaski Co., Kentucky, at the time of the Census.33
On 20 July 1822 at
Pulaski Co., Kentucky, a Warrant #8978 issued to Benjamin Floyd 20 July 1822
Pulaski Co., KY, surveyed for him 31 Aug 1822; certificate shows John Floyd a
chain carrier when surveyed. On back it is assigned by Benjamin Floyd to
Abraham Floyd, Sr. Grant issued to Abraham Floyd 19 Sep 1825 on above
warrant.34
Abraham applied for a
pension 9 May 1834 Decatur Co., Indiana, and the pension was issued 9 May 1834,
commencing 4 March 1831 for the amount of $35.55 a month for his services
during the Revolutionary War in the South Carolina Troops.
His Revolutionary War
experience was with the South Carolina Volunteers from 31 March 1776 to October
1776 and the U. S. Army from February 1777 to July 1779.
Abraham stated in his
application for the pension, that he was born in Camden, SC on 10 May 1755. He
states that he remembers this as his parents had told him, but did not mention
them by name.
Abraham volunteered
March 31, 1776 in the Camden District of South Carolina, served as a private in
Capt. William Byer's and Lieutenant Jacob Barnett. He joined a regiment of
volunteers at that place under Col. Thomas Neil, and also the main army or body
of volunteers under command of General Williamson. Marched from the Camden
District to the Cherokee Indian Nation and was involved in several skirmishes
and an engagement with the savages at a place called the Black Hole on the
French Broad River.

Was dismissed from

in the latter part of February 1777. He marched from the Camden District to
Augusta, GA and from there to Brier Creek in GA where he joined the American
Army under General Ash. Was in a battle against the British (under General
Provost) at Brier Creek where he was taken prisoner by the British, and carried
to Savannah, GA, from which place he made his escape about July 1779, and
returned home to Camden, SC.
He also stated that he
moved from Camden, SC to Burke County, NC in 1784, then to Madison County KY in
1801. He must have moved to Ky by 1796 as he shows up on the Tax Records at
that time. He then moved to Decatur County, IN in 1828.
In a letter from the
General Accounting Office to Mrs. Roscoe C. O'byrne of 12/5/1936, last pension
payment was for time between 9/4/1843 and 3/4/1844, was paid at Indiana Pension
Agency, Madison, IN on March 6, 1844 to Thomas Wilson, as attorney for the
pensioner. Thomas Wilson was married to Margaret, Abraham's daughter. On March
5, 1844, Abraham had certified that he had resided in Floyd Co., IN for 2
months and previous to that in Bartholomew County, IN.
Abraham has been
accounted for in all Census records except for year 1830. It doesn't look like
he was living with any of his children in either Kentucky or Indiana. He must
have been living in Decatur County, Indiana in 1834 as this is where he applied
for his pension. His statement above about living in Bartholomew County prior
to Floyd County is probably an error on his part as he was in Brown County 1n
1840 as listed in census, and Brown County was formed from Bartholomew, Jackson
and Monroe in 1836. Where he and son John were living, was part of Bartholomew
County when they formed Brown County.35
In 1840, Abraham was a
resident of Brown Co., Indiana, at the time of the Census living alone as a
Revolutionary War Pensioner
Notes for EVE JULIAN:
There was a Jacob
JULIAN on the 1778 Tax Records of Camden District, SC. Is this a brother or the
Father of Eve? Eve's mother was named in some court documents.
Colonel Wm. Hill vs.
Abraham Floyd, Trespass. Hugh Quinn, garnishee, declared that he gave a Bond to
Catherine Julian, Floyd's mother-in-law, which he belived was to pay to her in
trust for said Floyd, that he owes thereby about £58 Sterling. Catherine Julian
interpleads and claims said money, whereupon the Court orders a Jury to try.

the Declaration to be levied of the property of s'd Hugh Quinn. She died, The
last known record of Eve being alive is when she gave permission for her
daughter, Nancy, to marry on 1 January 1829.
Whether she went to
Indiana with husband and sons or died in Pulaski County before they made their
trip is unknown. When Abraham applied for his pension of the Revolutionary War,
there was no mention of wife and he was the only one listed in his household on
1840 Census of Brown Co., Indiana.

5. CATHERINE3 FLOYD (MATTHEW2, MR.1) was born
1760, and died Aft. 1799. She married CHARLES SR WARREN February
01, 1796 in Lincoln Co Kentucky. He was
born 1750.
Notes for CATHERINE FLOYD:
Catherine
"Caty"2 Floyd (4017) (Matthew1) was born circa 1760. She married
Charles Warren Sr. (4062) on 1 February 1796 at Lincoln Co., Kentucky, and the
marriage application listing her father Matthew Floyd as giving consent for her
to marry is another good possibility that she is the daughter of Matthew and
sister to Abraham and Marjery. The only other Matthew Floyd that was in that
area of Kentucky at that time would have been Abraham's son, and he was too
young to have a daughter that age to marry as he was only 18 years old in 1796
Children of CATHERINE FLOYD and CHARLES WARREN are:

18, 1822 in Wayne Co, KY, daughter of BENJAMIN SHIPLEY. She was born
1801 in tennessee.
Notes for MATTHEW FLOYD:
Matthew Floyd was one
of the most popular, beloved, and efficient preachers in Kentucky, in his
generation. His grandfather, Col.
Matthew Floyd, came to America in command of a regiment of British soldiers, in
time of the Revolutionary War. Being in
sympathy with the cause of the Colonists, he succeeded in winning his regiment
to his views, during the voyage across the ocean. Accordingly, on landing at Charleston, South
Carolina, he, with his entire command, entered the service of the United
Colonies, and fought on the side of American independence, during the War. His son, Abraham, who, as was his father, was
a native of Ireland, came to America in command of a company in his father's
regiment, and continued in the service of the Colonies, during their struggle
for liberty. After the close of the War,
Captain Floyd moved to Madison county, Kentucky, where he followed the
occupation of school teaching. He
finally moved to Indiana, where he died at the age of 104 years
.Matthew Floyd was the son of Captain
Abraham Floyd, and was born in South Carolina, in the year 1778. In 1796, he migrated with his parents to
Kentucky. He was brought up in the
Episcopal church, of which his parents were devout members. He received a common English education,
probably under the tuition of his father, and, in early life, joined the
Methodist society as a seeker.
Subsequently, he professed conversion, and united with a Baptist church
near the residence of his parents.
Coming home from the baptizing without having changed his garments, his
father was so angry with him for having joined the Baptists, that he drove him
from his house, with his wet clothes on.
However, he continued firm in his new faith. Arriving at manhood, he married Susannah,
daughter of Charles Warren, and settled in Pulaski county, near the present
location of Old White Oak Baptist church.
Here he commenced his long and eminently successful ministry, about the
year 1811. White Oak church was probably
the fruits of his first labors in the gospel.
He was called to the pastoral charge of this organization about the time
of its constitution, and served it with great acceptance, about 51 years. He also served with equal acceptance the
churches at Monticello, New Salem, Big Spring and Beaver Creek, all in Wayne
county. The churches he served belonged
to the old Cumberland River fraternity, till that body became so large as to
render attendance on its meetings inconvenient.
In 1825, Mr. Floyd's charges, with seven other churches, entered into
the constitution of South Concord Association.
Mr. Floyd had now become the leading minister in the Cumberland
Valley. His great popularity was evinced
in his being elected Moderator of the new Association, seventeen years in succession. Meanwhile, he preached the introductory
sermon before the body, as often as three times in succession.Soon after the
constitution of the General Association, in 1837, the subject of missions began
to agitate South Concord Association, and there are good reasons for believing
that it would have followed the example of Stocktons Valley, in declaring
unanimously against missionary operations, had it not been for the influence of
Mr. Floyd, who exerted his entire energies in favor of missions. The opposition in the Association a small
majority, including all the preachers of any considerable influence, except Mr.
Floyd, whose personal popularity still gave him the moderatorship. But it became manifest to him, that the two
parties could not live together in peace.
His prudence secured a peaceable and orderly separation, by the
dismissal of the missionary churches, by letter. He immediately secured the calling of a
convention of these churches and South Cumberland River was constituted, in
1842. He had been Moderator of South
Concord from its constitution, and he was now elected Moderator of South
Cumberland River Association, a position he continued to occupy, until his
death, a period of 21 years.Besides his pastoral labors, Mr. Floyd preached
abundantly among the destitute of Wayne, Pulaski and Russell counties, during
his entire ministry of 52 years.
He is believed to have been, at least, one of
the first missionaries employed by the General Association in his part of the
State. His success in the ministry was
extraordinary, and he baptized a great many people. He was a wise man in council, as well as an
efficient laborer in the field. But his
work was finished at last, and, on the 19th of August, 1863, he answered the
summons to come up higher.
