converted to Methodism by the great evangelist John Westley.

Wesley he entered the ministry after the Revolutionary War and returned to
Culpepper VA. He died while holding a
eligous meeting ib Dent's Run, VA with William Kendall.
Rev Kendall tied his body to his horse and reutrned him
to his family in Culpepper.

Catherine built in 1772 is in liveable condition. During the Indian Raids
of 1777 it was used as
a fort because is was so well constructed.
John died at home in 1779.
The cunningham cemetery
is located on the manor farm on Little Paw Paw Creek. The cemetery was started in 1825 with the
body of Sarah Cunningham. The farm is
now owned by David Dunmore Cunningham, a great grand son and third cunningham
to own the farm.

The family Cunningham
take their name from the district of Cunningham in Northern Ayrshire. The land
of Kilmaurs of that area was granted by Hugo De Moreville, Constable of
Scotland to a vassel named Warnebald in the 12 th century and it is from his
descendants that the Cunningham family originate.
Cunningham is a Scottish place name that described the man
from the location near Kilarmock and first recorded in 1153 as Cunegan, a word
with Breton origins. The spelling with
-ham added it earliest know mention in 1180.
When of Irish origin, Cunningham is the Anglicized form of O'Cuinneagain
meaning descendant of Cuinneagan, a form
of Conn meaning leader, chief.

Jul 1763, on Kerr Creek, Augusta Co., in a raid by Cornstalk's braves, on a
Sunday morning when most of the inhabitants were away at church, in what became
Rockbridge Co. Charles moved to Augusta Co. with his father from Chester Co.,
PA, by 1738, and by 1745 settled on Kerr Creek.

wife Elizabeth was a heroine in the terrible raid by Cornstalk; the Shawnees
were seen from Fort Young on Jackson River and an express was sent to William
Dougherty's, but he was away from home, so Elizabeth mounted and raced up the
Cowpasture valley warning settlers, who fled to the mountains before the
Indians arrived. The settlers of Kerr Creek were less fortunate and Charles
Dougherty, among others, was killed.

"The smaller band
of Indians made their descent upon Kerr's creek on the 17th of July (1763).
Their number was twenty-seven, Robert Irvin having counted them from a bluff
near the road at the head of the creek. Some weeks before, two boys, named
Telford, reported that when returning from school they had seen a naked man
near the path. This report was not much thought of till the massacre, when it
was supposed that the man seen by the boys was an Indian spy sent out to
reconnoiter....
From this point they
had a full view of the peaceful valley of Kerr's creek. Hastening down the
mountain, they began the work of indiscriminate slaughter. Coming first to the
house of Charles Daugherty, he and his whole family were murdered. They next
came to the house of Jacob Cunningham, who was gone from home, but his wife was
killed, and his daughter, about ten years of age, scalped and left for dead.
She revived, was carried off as prisoner in the second invasion, was redeemed,
and lived for forty years afterwards, but finally died from the effects of the
scalping. The Indians then proceeded to the house of Thomas Gilmore, and he was and his wife were killed, the other
members of the family escaping at that time. The house of Robert Hamilton came
next. This family consisted of ten persons, and one-half of them were slain. By
this time the alarm had spread through the neighborhood, and the inhabitants
were flying in every direction. For some reason the main body of the Indians
went no farther..... The people on Kerr's creek had repaired the
losses...basically Indians attacked again, only there were more of them. the wife of Thomas Gilmore, standing with her
three children over the body of her husband, fought with desperation the Indian
who scalped him. She and her son, John, and two daughters, were made
prisoners....
An entire family of
Daughertys, five Hamiltons, and three Gilmores were slain....Mrs. Gilmore
struck up, with plaintive voice, the 127th Psalm of Rouse's version....The
Indians then separated into several parties, dividing the prisoners among
themselves. Mrs. Gilmore and her son, John, fell to one party and her two
daughters to another. The last she ever heard of the latter was their cries as
they were torn from her.....the mother and son were also parted, she being sold
to French traders and the boy retained by the Shawnees. Finally he was redeemed
and brought back by Jacob Warwick to Jackson's river where he remained till his
mother's return."
Long before any white
man had explored the entire Kentucky area, it was claimed by Virginia as part
of her Augusta County. Daniel Boone brought his family to Kentucky in 1773;
established the first permanent settlement in Kentucky at Harrodsburg in 1774,
and a year later founded Boonesboro. That same year, 1775, John Daugherty, the
first of the family in Kentucky, came to the area a few miles from Boonesboro
which would become Lincoln County.

Our part of the
Daugherty migration to Kentucky was the second wave, descendants of Charles
Daugherty and wife Rebecca in the 1780s, ten years after his brother Michael
Daugherty II's sons. After Charles was killed by Indians in Augusta Co., VA in
1763, his widow and children remained there about ten years before some moved
west into Kentucky.
Charles and Rebecca's
son Cornelius, born ca 1729 probably in Pennsylvania, was a weaver who
immigrated with his father and grandfather to Augusta Co. from Chester Co., PA
in 1738. Cornelius served in Capt. George Robinson's company of militia in
1742. From 1742-49 Cornelius and his wife (1) Mary Hill lived on Cedar Creek on
the North fork of the Roanoke in Augusta Co. They had, according to one book,
six sons and six daughters, but not all their names are known; only George H.,
Noble, Ann, William, Isabel, Christopher, Abraham, Robert, Alexander, and
Thomas Daugherty. Mary Hill died and Cornelius married about 1770 (2) Agnes
_____. They had William, James Hill, John, and Cornelius R., Jr.
Charles Daugherty had,
besides Cornelius, William, Thomas, and David, a son Daniel who in 1779
operated an iron works on Irish Creek of South River, Augusta Co., VA, not far
from brother David's Mill Creek farm. Other brothers were Anthony, who died in
1792, Rockbridge Co., VA, and James who acted as Anthony's executor. The first
tax list of the new Rockbridge Co. (taken out of Augusta) in 1778 listed James,
William, and George Daugherty. In 1782 James, Anthony, William and Thomas were
on the list. James started an iron works in Wythe Co., VA 1783-90, and is said
to have died there in 1799.
Between 1755 and 1756,
CHARLES served in the Augusta Co. militia during the French and Indian war. In
Jul 1763, CHARLES was killed by Indians in a raid by Cornstalk's braves on Kerr
Creek, on a Sunday morning when most of the

Houston. MacLysaght says TRIMBLE is an
English surname found as early as 1659 in Ulster.

4. David and his brother Moses are reported by
Martha (Grigsby) Trimble in her letter of 1845 to have "moved westward and
settled in KY or Tennessee."
5. David lived on waters of Middle River in
Augusta County, VA; died in 1799 in Bourbon County, Ky, where his will dated
September 6, 1798 was recorded June
1799.
6. The first time David was mentioned in the
Augusta County, VA records was when he was named as a tithable for road duty
along with Walter, James and John Trimble.
7. He witnessed a deed in Augusta County in
1745 and was a land owner in 1746. On
August 2, 1747 his son James was baptized by Rev. Craig. A David Trimble, possibly this David Trimble
is mentioned in the Augusta County records as follows:

Calvin.--James Calvin, James Trimble, William Trimble, David Trimble, all of
New Castle, Province of Pennsylvania.
Bond to Valentine Henderson of Belfast, County of Antrim. Dated 27th
September, 1740. Henderson died during the progress of the suit. In deeds recorded in 1788 in Augusta County,
VA, John Trimble and wife Margaret and David Trimble sold land on Middle
River. This was apparently their place
of residence. David moved to Kentucky in
1797.
8. Like his brother James, David was a
surveyor and was appointed on May 18, 1773, as deputy surveyor of Augusta Co.,
VA. He was a large landowner in the
Valley of Virginia, both at the Forks-of-James, east of Lexington, VA and on
Middle River, this being his home plantation.
Just after the Rev. War, when his sons migrated to Kentucky around the
Montgomery County area, David made the move with them. At this time John, James and Moses were
already deceased, also David's wife.
This probably accounted for his decision to move from his home in VA to
the Kentucky area. His will is recorded
at the Bourbon County, Kentucky, Courthouse.
It appears that David and James were the closer of the Five Trimble
Brothers as their names appear together frequently on documents recorded in the
Virginia valley. This close tie could
have been due to them having the same profession of surveying.

James Trimble, George Trimble and Isaac Trimble who made oath thereto and
together with James Dennison, James Fulton & John Boyd their securities,
entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of three hundred pounds
conditioned agreeably to law; Certificate is granted them for obtaining Letters

Two of William Alkire's
brothers, John & George Alkire as well as Fergus Graham were at the Cane
Ridge Protracted Meeting in 1801, held under the auspices of Barton Warren
Stone. Later the three mentioned
were Christian,
sometimes called "New Light" Preachers. George Alkire invited his
good friend Stone up to OH to begin the church at the Deer Creek
settlement. George & Fergus,
neighbors, held an annual protracted meeting, and Fergus always donated a beef
critter roasted on a spit, to help feed the multitudes. Certainly Fergus' descendants were active in
the Christian Church, and as Humphries, in his Lives of Deceased Christian
Ministers says, "Pity the poor Trinitarian who wandered into their
camp!" (I believe that would include the Anglicans)! These men were part of the backbone of the
restoration movement.

weaver was born circa 1729? at PA? He began military service in 1742 at Augusta
Co., VA, was in Capt. George Robinson's Co. of militia. He was weaver in 1742.
He lived between 1742 and 1779 at Augusta Co., VA (on Cedar Creek of the North
fork of Roanoke). He married Mary HILL circa 1748? (1st wife; they had,
according to one book, six sons and six daughters, but only the name of one
were known). He was on bond of Moses Cunningham, executor of James Cunningham's
estate. Charles Daugherty's land was on Cunningham Creek on 16 Jan 1760 at
Augusta Co., VA. He deeded the 80 acres on Carr's Creek of James River between
House and North Mountains, which was patented by his father Charles on 2 Mar
1763 at Augusta Co., VA. He deeded 125 acres on Carr's Creek, a branch of the
James River on 19 Mar 1765 at Augusta Co., VA. He witnessed the deed of John
Edminston for 170 acres in Borden's Tract on 9 Oct 1765 at Augusta Co., VA. He
witnessed the will of Jonathan Cunningham of Carrs Creek, a son of Hugh
Cunningham, neighbors of Charles Daugherty on 24 May 1769 at Augusta Co., VA.
He married Agnes _____ DAUGHERTY circa 1770? (2nd wife). He was on a jury in
this county formed 1769 out of Augusta Co on 26 Nov 1771 at Botetourt Co., VA.

on the jury on 9 May 1783 at Botetourt Co., VA. He was granted 500 acres on
Muddy Creek on main branch of the creek about 3 miles from head of Lick Creek
on 25 May 1786 at Lincoln Co., KY. He was on tax lists, was said to move to KY
the year after Boone and lived at Estill Station 7 years between 1787 and 1797

William Daugherty
(Sr.) married Easther _____. He served in the Revolutionary war from Rockbridge
Co., VA, in Oct 1777, a Pvt. under Capt. John Paxton, and is listed on bronze
plaque beside Lincoln Co., KY Court House door. His children were Martha,
Hanna, William Jr., Charles, John, and Esther. On 22 Aug 1785 he was granted
200 acres in Lincoln Co., KY, by virtue of military warrant No. 1153. In Dec of
the same year he was granted 600 acres on the forks of Otter Creek as assignee
of his brother Thomas. In 1787 he was granted 87 acres on Callaway's Creek
adjoining Thomas Daugherty. In 1820 and 1830 he was on the same census page as
his son John, daughter-in-law Susan or Susanna (Magill, widow of his son
William, Jr.), and James Magill. On 11 Feb 1833 he applied for Revolutionary
pension, which was granted, No. S16369.
By the time he wrote
his will on 17 Jan 1834 in Lincoln Co., his son John had died, for William Sr.
divided his land and estate half to his wife Easther, except half the kitchen
furniture to their daughter Esther Wells and then to her daughter Emily; and
the other half of estate to Dorcas Daugherty "wife of my deceased son
John." The will was probated in Jun 1835.
Nothing more is known
of brother Thomas.

1. COPY OF PENSION APPLICATION OF WILLIAM
TRIMBLE
On this 12th day of
October in this year 1833 personally appeared before Simon Weaver, an acting
Justice of the Peace for Pulaski County, and a member of the Pulaski County
Court in the state aforesaid, said court being a Court of Record established by
the Constitution and laws of the State of Kentucky, William Trimble, a resident
of said county and state of Kentucky aged about seventy one years, who being
first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath state, in consequence of
his bodily infirmity he is unable to attend or appear in, and before the
Pulaski County Court not having been able to leave his residence or room for a
considerable time past owing to his infirm state of health aforesaid, and the
said William Trimble on his oath makes the following declaration, in order to
obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June
7th, 1832. That he volunteered in the
Army of the United States in the month of September in the year 1777 in the
county of Augusta and State of Virginia with Captain Joseph Patterson,
commanded by Col. Dickinson, in the Brigade of General Hann, to serve a tour of
duty of three months during the Revolutionary War against the Indians hostile
at that time, was Marched from Stanton through Greenbrier to the Point on the
Ohio River, and there remained or was stationed until the expiration of three
months and was then discharged by said General Hann, and returned home to my
said residence in the County of Augusta.
Afterward to the best of this applicants, William Trimble, recollection
in the month of September in the year 1779 he served a tour of duty of three
months as a substitute in the room of his brother James Trimble, who was
drafted to serve for three months against the hostile Indians to wit the Tuschaway
Tribe of Indians, marching from the town of Stanton in said County of Augusta
and State of Virginia, under Captain William Henderson commanded by Col.
William Boyer and in the brigade of Genl. McIntosh, to the town of said tribe
of Indians called at that time the Tuschaway Towns, crossing the Ohio River at
McIntosh's Fort or Garrison, from thence to said Indian Towns, at which place
the said Gen. McIntosh concluded or made a treaty with said Indians in the
month of December, or January following to the best of his, the said William
Trimble's, recollection. When he was discharged having served out his tour and
then returned home to his residence in the said County of Augusta and State of
Va.
Afterwards, the said
William Trimble sites, in the month of December, in the year 1780, he was
drafted to serve and perform a tour of military duty in the service of the
United States against the British. The
company commanded by Capt. James Trimble, in the Reg. of Col. Sampson Matthews,
was marched from the town of Stanton in County of Augusta, to Fredericksburg -
remaining there two or three days from thence to Gerico, near the sea shore,
marched through the now city of Richmond thence through Petersburg from thence
to Gerico where the troops were stationed and remained till the expiration of
the three months, the time for which he was drafted to serve as aforesaid, and
was there discharged or dismissed from further service, and again returned home
to his residence in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia. Afterwards, to the best of his the said Wm.
Trimble's recollection in the month of July, in the year 1781 or 82, he
volunteered in the said County of Augusta, Va. to serve a tour of duty of three
months in the service of the United States against Great Britain in the mounted
Rifle Company commanded by Capt. James Trimble, marched upwards of 200 miles in
a direction towards New York. The said
Wm. Trimble states that the company of troops to which he belonged during his
servitude was frequently visited by Col. Dick belonging to the regular service
or army of the United States, and continued in said mounted company twenty
days. I was then discharged, but the
time or place he cannot now precisely recollect, he being at that time very
young, and it being a long time since, but to the best of his recollection it
was about two months before the surrender of Cornwallis and then returned home
to his place of residence above mentioned in Augusta County Virginia, receiving
a discharge for a tour of three month, in consequence of his having equipped
himself as aforesaid by furnishing himself a horse etc. The said William Trimble states he has no
documentary evidence having lost or mislaid his several discharges for his
services as above mentioned, and knows of nor person or persons by whom he can
establish his service, or who has a personal knowledge of them. But states the
above named services were performed by him with embodied corps called into
service, as he as the time understood, and still believes by competent authority,
and for the times which all his said service as mentioned were performed and
performing he was not employed in any civil pursuit. An he hereby relinquishes every claim
whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name
is not on the pension roll of the agency of any sate. Answer to interrogatories put to him as
prescribed by the War Department, to wit:
Answer to lst
interrogatory he the said William Trimble states on his oath that he was born
in the County of Augusta and State of Virginia, the day month nor year not
recollecting having no record of his age, but supposes it was in the year 1760
as he was put on the muster roll at the age of 16 years of age and that he had
been on the muster roll to the best of his recollection one year previous to
his volunteering to perform the first tour of duty as in his declaration
states.
Answer to 3rd
interrogatory (the 2nd having been answered in the first to the record of his
age) he states on oath that he was living at the time of volunteering to
perform the 1st tour of duty as in his declaration states in the County of
Augusta in the State of Virginia, in which county he was born and which said
County of Augusta he continued to and did live in during the Revolutionary War,
except the time he was absent therefrom the service of the United States.
To 4th interrogatory
he states he volunteered to perform his 1st tour of duty. Substituted in the place of his brother James
Trimble the 2nd. And then was drafted when he performed his 3rd tour of duty
and volunteered to perform the 4th tour, all of which appear in his annexed
declaration.
To 5th interrogatory,
he the said William Trimble here again states, that Col. Dick of the regular
Army frequently visited the army or troops to which he belonged during his
service, but being very young cannot recollect or state the regiment, he being
kept out reconnoitering and he states that he has no recollection at this time
of ever having seen the main or regular army during his service more than one
time.
To 6th interrogatory,
I received discharges for the several tours performed by me as in my
declaration mentioned, but have lost or so mislaid them that I cannot find
them.
To the 7th
interrogatory, He states he is known to Robert Gilmore and Christley Tarter of
Pulaski County, and residing in his present neighborhood, by whom he can prove
his character for veracity and their belief of this service as a soldier of the
Revolution, he further states that there is no clergyman at this time residing
in Pulaski County immediately in his said Trimble's neighborhood.

she can prove her marriage. Her husband kept a record of their marriage and the
first three of their children to wit, David Trimble, James Trimble and Betsy
Raburn Trimble, in his own hand writing in a black sealed skin pocket book,
which is here exhibited for inspection.
She states that her name before marriage was Mary Flemin. That the three of their children whose births
are recorded in said pocket book are written immediately under the entry of
their marriage, that the births of the other persons entered in said pocket
book at a different place are not her children, but are her grand
children. That David Trimble her eldest
and first child was born 20th January 1788.
She further states that William Trimble her late husband departed this
life on the sixth day of June 1840 in the county of Pulaski State of Kentucky,
that he was a soldier of the army of the United States in the Revolutionary War
and was at the time of his death a Revolutionary pensioner of the Untied
States, she respectfully refers to his declaration on filed in the pension
Department made by him to obtain a pension for his services in the
Revolutionary War. That she is now the
widow of said William Trimble, that they had nine children of the following
names to wit, David, James, Betsy R., William, Polly, John, Joicy, Letitha and
Ellsebeth Trimble. That her husband
moved from Greenbrier County, State of Virginia to the County of Bourbon and
State of Kentucky about the first of October 1792 and lived there about three
years, he then moved to the County of Harrison, State of Kentucky and lived
there about ten years, they then moved to the County of Pulaski, State of
Kentucky that they lived together as man and wife in the County of Pulaski till
his death and in which county she has ever since resided.
