Notes for WILLIAM M. MULLINS:

The Mullins trace their fathers to Ireland. The eponymous ancestor, Mullan, was descended from a King of Connacht.

The parents of William Grancer are unknown. There's been much discussion over the years about the Des Mouline line and William Grancer Mullins. Original records all indicate Abraham left from Virignia soon after arrival and received rights to a deed in Perquimans County, North by 1707 and is consistently listed in court records in Perquiman County, North Carolina. The information on Abraham being the father of William Mullins came from undocumented sources that were listed by researchers many years ago. Researchers who have checked into the lineage of Abraham and William can find no documents to make a connection between the two. There were many other early Mullins families in Virginia who were near Hanover County. Abraham Moulin (the family spelled the name Mullen in North Carolina) was living in North Carolina when William Mullins married Katherine. Also, the birth date for William Mullins and his marriage date are only approximates and based on the best estimates available. William and Katherine Mullins acknowledged a deed in King William County, Virginia in 1721 --- which would seem to indicate they were married by that date. And the approximate birth dates of some of their children and the above record place William's birth date as ca 1700 or possibly earlier. By the way, the first names in the Mullins line always repeat Abraham does not

The Mullins are considered Melungeons by some people

The Melungeons are most likely the descentants of the late 16th century Portuguese  and Turks stranded on the Carolina shores when the settlement of Santa Elena, South Carolina was abaandoned by the Spanish.  They later intermarried with the Powhatan , Pamunkey, Chickahominy and Catawba Indians.  After being abandoned in the outlying Spanish Forts, They settled in the Appalachians and further married with Cherokees and  Northern Europern settlers. They may also mingled  with the survivors of several hundred Moorish and Turkish galley slaves and Portuguese and Spanish prisoners

left on the Roanoke Island by Sir Francis Drake in 1586.

The word Melungeon is both Portuguese, meaning White people, and Turkish meaning cursed soul.

The Melugeons were a group of dark skinned people with European features found living int mountains of VA, KY, NC, and West VA.

Notes for JOHN WESLEY MULLINS:

John Wesley Mullins lived in Dickenson County most of his life. Because he fought in the Revolutionary War at King's Mountain, Tennessee, he became known as "Revolution John". Since he was the only person from Dickenson County to fight in that war a plaque was erected in his honor at the Dickenson County courthouse.

He is said to be buried in a hollow log and his grave is located in Dickenson County where it is still visited by his descendants.

He was captured by the British soldiers and spent 10 years in prison in England, he came home and died at the home of his son "Holly Creek" John Jr.

It is believed he may have had another wife, Mollie Brandon, but that hasn't been proven yet.

BIOGRAPHY: JOHN (REVOLUTIONARY) MULLINS was born abt 1752 in Ballymoney,

Northern Ireland, and died February 28, 1849 in Clintwood, Dickenson. Co., Va.

BIOGRAPHY: The following biography is taken from the records of LLOYD FLEMING:

Notes: Mullins family tradition indicates that the Mullins Family

came to America from Ireland, thence to North Carolina, then Tennessee,

then Eastern Kentucky and Southwestern Virginia.

John Wesley Mullins is the earliest documented ancestor of the East

Kentucky Mullins. He lived in 1790 on the Big Toe River, in the Morgan

District of Burke Co., NC. In 1796 he was in Carter Co., TN; and in 1799 in Grainger Co., TN. When families were migrating they often stopped for a year or more to raise crops before moving on in their search for land.

Family tradition indicates that, during the revolutionary war,

John's NC home was on the route that Col. William Campbell and his "Over the Mountain Men" took as they went in search of Col. Ferguson and the British Army who were coming to destroy the homes of the mountaineers.

John took down his gun from the wall and joined Col. Campbell and his

men, as they passed, on their way to King's Mountain where they fought a victorious battle against the British. Although he is not listed among the King's Mountain soldiers, John received three different pay vouchers for his services and a grant for 200 acres of land in Sullivan Co., TN

(NC Land Grants Now in TN [1778-1791] by Gardner and Cartright).

John Mullins settled on Shelby Creek in Pike Co., KY by 1810 along

with his son Solomon. He lived there until 1833 when his name first

appears, along with that of his youngest son, John, Jr., on the Tax rolls of Russell Co., VA. He lived there, near his youngest son, John, Jr., on Holly Creek, which became part of Dickenson Co., VA when that county was created in 1880.

John Mullins became a legend in his life time. He told and retold stories of the Battle of King's Mountain and of his adventures in the wilderness. He was known as "Buttin John" Mullins because when fighting he would butt his opponent in the stomach. After the death of his wife, he came to live with his youngest son, John, Jr. It is not known exactly when his wife died, but it was apparently sometime in the 1840's since she is listed along with her husband on the 1840 Census of Russell Co., VA. She was probably buried near their old home at Clintwood, VA, which was then Russell Co. (Now Dickenson Co.,VA).

Ambrose Mullins was born in Franklin County, VA in 1752. The first County

Court for Henry County, VA was held on the third

Monday of January 1777 and Ambrose Mullins was among the 630 who took

the oath of allegiance to the United States.

Ambrose was drafted into the Virginia Militia May 9 or 10, 1781 and served

in James Peteet's Company under General Greene at the battle of Guilford's

courthouse. He was released from service in September 1781 and returned home.

On January 30, 1835, Ambrose appeared in court in Russell County, VA and applied

for a pension as a veteran of the Revolution. The Russell County Census for 1820 lists

Ambrose Mullins' household: Ambrose Mullins Sr. Ambrose Jr., Isham, James

and Jseph Mullins.

He resided at Ambrose branch about 1810 in the Birchfield section of Wise Co on Dotson Creek.

He was one of the first settlers on this creek. Ambrose Branch is an east flowing tributary of the

Birchfield. His house, a story and a half of hewn log construction, stood on a slight rise above

Ambrose Branch. It was built before the Indian raid on his plantation about 1810. Ambrose

had fought with the Indians in Pike Co. KY before moving to this location so he built port holes

for firing on attackers. The 1810 raid was beaten off, but Ambrose was later killed by Indians

when he attempted to rescue a small daughter who had gone to a nearby spring for water. Sometime

before 1930 the chimney tumbled and the porch caved in. After that time the house was used as a barn.
