3 Anderson Mainard
Company D, 13th Kentucky Cavalry,
USA
21 Oct 1863-13 Dec 1864
Anderson is the son of Andrew
"Drury" Maynard and Elizabeth "Betsy" Williams. He chose to use a
different spelling for his surname, Mainard. He was married three times.
His first marriage was to Elizabeth "Betsy" Sheldon. We do not know who
her parents were. Anderson is with his parents in the 1850 census in
Tennessee. In the 1860 census he is in Clinton County, Kentucky with his
wife, Betsy, his mother and two of his siblings. So, we know he and
Betsy married before 1860 but whether in Tennessee or Kentucky, we do
not know. Why is mother and siblings were with him in Kentucky in 1860
we also do not know. Perhaps they were just visiting or perhaps moving
to a safer area in anticipation of the Civil War. We don't know. By
1870, Anderson and Betsy have migrated to Wayne County, Kentucky. They
do not appear to have added any children in that time period but are
joined in the census by what we suspect are Betsy's siblings. There is
much we need to learn about Anderson during this period. If anyone knows
anything, please contact me.
By the 1880 census, Betsy is
"gone", and Andrew has a second wife, Martha. Her last name and
parentage we do not know. And, Andrew has migrated again. This time he
is in Adair County, Kentucky. In this census, there are five children
with Andrew and Martha. Further
research indicates these children were born in the years 1871-1879.
Anderson dies in 1890 in Lincoln
County, Kentucky. Sometime between 1880 and his death, he picks up a 3rd
wife, Angeline. We only know of her existence as she filed for and
received a widow's pension after Anderson's death.
Anderson enlisted on 15 Aug 1863
in Allen County, Kentucky and was mustered in on 23 Dec 1863 in
Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky. He was appointed to Corporal on 25 Dec
1863. Service records indicate he was present for all roll-calls
but nothing else
significant in the record until he was mustered out on 10 Jan 1865 at
Camp Nelson, Kentucky.Anderson applied for and was approved for an
invalid pension on 18 Dec 1879. His widow, Angeline, applied for and was
approved
for a widow's pension on 29
Jul 1890. A minor grandson, John H. Manning was also included in the
pension.

18 Wm. Burton
CO. C 6th KY CAV CSA
William M Burton, also known as
William R. Burton, was born to John J. and Malinda ( also spelled "Mahulda)
Burton. His birth dates range from 1836 to 1841 but 1836 is on the
tombstone and seems the more accurate. He stated that he was 22
and born in 1840 when he married
for the first time in 1862. He married Mary " Polly" Warren, the
daughter of Fielden and Rebecca Warren, on December 30, 1862 in Pulaski
County and they had at least three children before she apparently died
around 1875-76.
William then married Minerva Acton ( Action), daughter of James and
Elizabeth Warren Acton, on August 14, 1876 in Pulaski City, Kentucky and
they had at least eight children together and remained married until she
died in the early 1920's
After he went missing from the Confederate 6th Kentucky Calvary in
October 1862 it seems he made it to Pulaski County in order to marry
Mary in December ( altering his age in the process). He then, as many
others did in Eastern Kentucky,
joined the Union Army as a
private in Company H, 32nd Kentucky Infantry, July 1863 and served until
some time in 1864.
On March 1, 1907 William applied for his Civil War Pension |

reenlisted and the Company was merged with Company D.
He was captured by the
Confederate forces on April 6, 1865 and declared missing on April 8,
1865 while participating in Wilson’s raid in Alabama. He was paroled at
Vicksburg, Mississippi on the 21st of April 1865 and on April 27, 1865
headed home to Clay Co.,
KY .
When the “Sultana”, with an 800 person capacity left Vicksburg in
high tide it was loaded with 2500 soldiers. Early in the morning near a
group of islands called Hen and Chickens, just South of nearby Memphis
TN,
the paddle wheel’s boilers
exploded due to the strong river currents and the overload of soldiers.
Approximately 1800 returning soldiers were killed in the explosion from
the fire and ship parts which scattered on both land and in the river.
Other steamboats which departed after a down river from the “Sultana”
began hitting the floating bodies about 3:00 AM and thought that they
were hitting logs from the rising tide of the river. Approximately half
of the bodies were recovered
and buried later at
Memphis. Benjamin’s body was never found and news of the event made
little note because it happened the week of President Lincoln’s
assassination. Thomas’ son, Mr. Ed Houp, formerly of Ludlow, was
buried at
Pleasant Point cemetery
last Sunday. Services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Singleton. A large
concourse of friends and relatives followed the remains to their last
resting place.
Edward married Martha Harris.

Thomas’ wife Nancy Hensley’s sister Zand America Hensley (1832 – 1902)
