Abraham Lincoln (13 May
1744 – May 1786), grandfather of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was a
militia captain during the American Revolution, and a pioneer settler of
Kentucky.
Captain Abraham Lincoln
was a descendant of Samuel Lincoln (1622 – 1690), who was born in Hingham,
Norfolk, England, and who, as a weaver's apprentice, immigrated to
Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637. Abraham's father John Lincoln (1716 – 1788)
was born in Monmouth County in the province of New Jersey, and grew up in the
Schuylkill river valley in the province of Pennsylvania. Typical of his class,
John Lincoln learned a trade, in his case weaving, to practice alongside the
subsistence farming necessary on the colonial frontier. The Lincoln home farm
on Heister's Creek, in what is now Exeter Township, Berks County, was left to
John's half-brothers, the children of his father's second marriage. In 1743,
John Lincoln married Rebecca Morris (1720 – 1806), daughter of Enoch Flowers of
Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Rebecca was the widow of
James Morris and the mother of a young son, Jonathan Morris.[1][2][3]
Abraham Lincoln was
born 13 May 1744 in what is now Berks County, Pennsylvania.[4] Abraham was the
first child born to John and Rebecca Lincoln, who had nine children in all:
Abraham born 1744, twins Hannah and Lydia born 1748, Isaac born 1750, Jacob
born 1751, John born 1755, Sarah born 1757, Thomas born 1761, and Rebecca born
1767.[5][6]
His life[edit]
Abraham Lincoln learned
the tanner's trade and later took his brother John as his apprentice. A
prominent tanner of Berks County in those days was James Boone (1709 – 1785),
uncle to Daniel Boone. James Boone was a near neighbor to the Lincolns of
Heister's Creek, and his daughter Anne was married to John Lincoln's
half-brother. This family connection may have influenced Abraham's choice of
occupation.[1][7][8]
In 1768 Abraham's
father John Lincoln purchased land in the Shenandoah Valley in the colony of Virginia.
He settled his family on a 600-acre (2.4 km2) tract on Linville Creek in
Augusta County (now Rockingham County). In 1773, John and Rebecca Lincoln
divided their tract with their two eldest sons, Abraham and Isaac. Abraham
built a house on his land, across Linville Creek from his parents' home.[5]
Capt Abraham Lincoln
married Mary Shipley in 1772. His second wife was Bathsheba Herring (c. 1742 –
1836), a daughter of Alexander Herring (c. 1708–1778) and his wife Abigail
Harrison (c. 1710 – c. 1780) of Linville Creek. Five children were born to
Abraham: Mordecai born circa 1771, Josiah born circa 1773, Mary born circa
1775, Thomas born 1778, and Nancy born 1780.[5][6]
During the American
Revolutionary War, Abraham served as a captain of the Augusta County militia,
and with the organization of Rockingham County in 1778, he served as a captain
for that county. He was in command of sixty of his neighbors, ready to be
called out by the governor of Virginia and marched where needed. Captain
Lincoln's company served under General Lachlan McIntosh in the fall and winter
of 1778, assisting in the construction of Fort McIntosh in Pennsylvania and
Fort Laurens in Ohio.
In 1780, Abraham
Lincoln sold his land on Mill Creek, and in 1781 he moved his family to Kentucky,
then a district of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The family settled in
Jefferson County, about twenty miles (32 km) east of the site of Louisville.
The territory was still contested by Indians living across the Ohio River. For
protection the settlers lived near frontier forts, called stations, to which
they retreated when the alarm was given. Abraham Lincoln settled near Hughes'
Station on Floyd's Fork and began clearing land, planting corn, and building a
cabin.[5][9] Lincoln owned at least 5,544 acres of land in the richest sections
of Kentucky.[10]
Death[edit]
One day in May 1786,
Abraham Lincoln was working in his field with his three sons when he was shot
from the nearby forest and fell to the ground. The eldest boy, Mordecai, ran to
the cabin where a loaded gun was kept, while the middle son, Josiah, ran to
Hughes' Station for help. Thomas, the youngest, stood in shock by his father.
From the cabin, Mordecai observed an Indian come out of the forest and stop by
his father's body. The Indian reached for Thomas, either to kill him or to
carry him off. Mordecai took careful aim and shot the Indian in the chest,
killing him.[1][5]
Tradition states that
Captain Abraham Lincoln was buried by his cabin, which is now the site of Long
Run Baptist Church and Cemetery near Eastwood, Kentucky. A stone memorializing
Captain Abraham Lincoln was placed in the cemetery in 1937.[11]
Bathsheba Lincoln was
left a widow with five underage children. She moved the family away from the
Ohio River, to Washington County, Kentucky, where the country was more thickly
settled and there was less danger of Indian attack. Under the law then
operating, Mordecai Lincoln, as the eldest son, inherited two-thirds of his
father's estate when he reached the age of twenty-one, with Bathsheba receiving
one-third. The other children inherited nothing. Life was hard, particularly
for Thomas, the youngest, who got little schooling and was forced to go to work
at a young age.[5][9]
In later years Thomas
Lincoln would recount the story of the day his father died to his son, Abraham
Lincoln, the future sixteenth president of the United States of America.
"The story of his death by the Indians," the president later wrote,
"and of Uncle Mordecai, then fourteen years old, killing one of the
Indians, is the legend more strongly than all others imprinted on my mind and
memory

Notes for BENJAMIN SHIPLEY:
Notes for Benjamin
SHIPLEY Sr.
Note 1: PLACEMENT
TENTATIVE. There is considerable confusion among different sources as the the
ages and relations of the various Richard and Benjamin Shipleys of Anne Arundel
Co., MD. Some LDS files indicate that Benjamin, son of Richard Jr. and Keturah
(Barnes) Shipley, was b. abt 1730 (AA Co., MD) and died 1803 in Washington Co.,
TN. The present Benjamin (1751-1828) appears to be a generation later and is
TENTATIVELY placed as a sun of the elder Benjamin (1729-1803). Researcher Keith
Dull (pers. comm.) thinks the present Benjamin (1751-1828) may be the son of a
different sibling of the elder Benjamin.
Note 2: The
designations of Benjamin Sr., Jr., and 3rd are NOT found in official records; I
use these suffixes here for clarity to distinguish among this string of three
Shipley's with the same given name. The present person is the eldest in a line
of at least three Benjamin SHIPLEYs. I have confusion over the possibility that
this Benjamin had a second wife named "Amelia Hobbs"; see my note
under Benjamin Shipley 3rd.
Mrs. Charles Floyd
abstracted a deed in Wayne Co., KY (Bk B, p. 274) from Isaac BOND to Benjamin
SHIPLEY on 20 Nov 1815, for 200 acres, $300, for land S of Cumberland River. It
is not known to which Benjamin (father or son) this deed refers. It was
apparently the heirs of Benjamin Jr. (b. bef 1775) who sold off land in that
area after Bnejamin Jr.'s death in 1826.369

with son Raney Floyd.
In 1880 Lucinda
Shipley was living in household of Riley Henderson and Lucinda Jane at Pulaski
Co., Kentucky, at the time of the 1880 Census.
Notes for MATTHEW FLOYD:
Matthew Floyd was one
of the most popular, beloved, and efficient preachers in Kentucky, in his
generation. His grandfather, Col.
Matthew Floyd, came to America in command of a regiment of British soldiers, in
time of the Revolutionary War. Being in
sympathy with the cause of the Colonists, he succeeded in winning his regiment
to his views, during the voyage across the ocean. Accordingly, on landing at Charleston, South
Carolina, he, with his entire command, entered the service of the United
Colonies, and fought on the side of American independence, during the War. His son, Abraham, who, as was his father, was
a native of Ireland, came to America in command of a company in his father's
regiment, and continued in the service of the Colonies, during their struggle
for liberty. After the close of the War,
Captain Floyd moved to Madison county, Kentucky, where he followed the
occupation of school teaching. He
finally moved to Indiana, where he died at the age of 104 years
.Matthew Floyd was the son of Captain
Abraham Floyd, and was born in South Carolina, in the year 1778. In 1796, he migrated with his parents to
Kentucky. He was brought up in the
Episcopal church, of which his parents were devout members. He received a common English education,
probably under the tuition of his father, and, in early life, joined the
Methodist society as a seeker.
Subsequently, he professed conversion, and united with a Baptist church
near the residence of his parents.
Coming home from the baptizing without having changed his garments, his
father was so angry with him for having joined the Baptists, that he drove him
from his house, with his wet clothes on.
However, he continued firm in his new faith. Arriving at manhood, he married Susannah,
daughter of Charles Warren, and settled in Pulaski county, near the present
location of Old White Oak Baptist church.
Here he commenced his long and eminently successful ministry, about the
year 1811. White Oak church was probably
the fruits of his first labors in the gospel.
He was called to the pastoral charge of this organization about the time
of its constitution, and served it with great acceptance, about 51 years. He also served with equal acceptance the
churches at Monticello, New Salem, Big Spring and Beaver Creek, all in Wayne
county. The churches he served belonged
to the old Cumberland River fraternity, till that body became so large as to
render attendance on its meetings inconvenient.
In 1825, Mr. Floyd's charges, with seven other churches, entered into
the constitution of South Concord Association.
Mr. Floyd had now become the leading minister in the Cumberland
Valley. His great popularity was evinced
in his being elected Moderator of the new Association, seventeen years in succession. Meanwhile, he preached the introductory
sermon before the body, as often as three times in succession.Soon after the
constitution of the General Association, in 1837, the subject of missions began
to agitate South Concord Association, and there are good reasons for believing
that it would have followed the example of Stocktons Valley, in declaring
unanimously against missionary operations, had it not been for the influence of
Mr. Floyd, who exerted his entire energies in favor of missions. The opposition in the Association a small
majority, including all the preachers of any considerable influence, except Mr.
Floyd, whose personal popularity still gave him the moderatorship. But it became manifest to him, that the two
parties could not live together in peace.
His prudence secured a peaceable and orderly separation, by the
dismissal of the missionary churches, by letter. He immediately secured the calling of a
convention of these churches and South Cumberland River was constituted, in
1842. He had been Moderator of South
Concord from its constitution, and he was now elected Moderator of South
Cumberland River Association, a position he continued to occupy, until his
death, a period of 21 years.Besides his pastoral labors, Mr. Floyd preached abundantly
among the destitute of Wayne, Pulaski and Russell counties, during his entire
ministry of 52 years.
He is believed to have been, at least, one of
the first missionaries employed by the General Association in his part of the
State. His success in the ministry was
extraordinary, and he baptized a great many people. He was a wise man in council, as well as an
efficient laborer in the field. But his
work was finished at last, and, on the 19th of August, 1863, he answered the
summons to come up higher.
Rev. Matthew3 Floyd
(Abraham2, Matthew1) was born on 2 October 1778 at South Carolina. He married Susannah Warren on 11 July 1804 at Lincoln Co., Kentucky. He then married Lucinda Shipley on 18 July 1822 at at Wayne Co., Kentucky,
