This story that  has been passed down through our family for years.  My great, great grand father, John Hicks told this story to one of his sons and one of his children wrote it down. We have always believed it to be true. I had my DNA check and it came back with no trace of American Indian.  So I am a little doubtful now.

 

JOHN HICKS was born April 1840 in Arizona’s Chiricahua apache Indian village, and died November 16, 1908 in Science, Hill Pulaski Ky.    He married (1) AN INDIAN MAIDIAN in Arizona.  She died in Died In Arizona at a young age.  He married (2) MALINDA NORRIS January 20, 1858 in Crossville Tenn.  She was born May 1840 in Science Hill, Pulaski Co Ky, and died November 07, 1902. He married (3) LUCY A. WHITE.

 

The name Hicks comes from Robert Hicks a Missionary from Loveland Colorado.  The name was transferred to a Chiricahua Apache Indian. .

 

He was supposed to have been a sub Chief under Cochise.  Sometime between 1850-1860, before Cochise started his war against the US in the early 1860's.

 

He married an Indian girl and had 3 children.  She died at a very young age.  No one knows her name or what happened to the children.

 

He migrated from Arizona to Loveland, Colorado.  He took the name John and married another Indian girl name Malinda Norris / b May-1840.  John / b 4-1840 and Malinda had 3 children.  2 boys and a girl, Jesse David, /b 9-17-1865 Rachel  /b 4-27-1867, and General Thomas /B 1-26-1869.  Malinda died Nov. 7, 1902 in Science Hill, KY.  John then married Lucy White 3-12-1903.  He died in Science Hill Nov. 16, 1908.

 

A free inhabitants list of Cumberland Co. TN dated June 21, 1860 list John Hicks, 19 years of age, farm hand, and Malinda Hicks age 19, house wife.  A population list of Pulaski County, KY dated June 1, 1900, Listed John Hicks age 60, Head of Household, Malinda Hicks, age 60, House wife.

 

John was mustered in Company. K 37th KY Inf. as a private in Glasgow KY, Sept 2, 1863.   Age listed as 21.  Joined for duty and enrolled Sept 10, 1863 in Campbellsville, Ky. He was mustered out in Louisville KY, Feb 1, 1865.

 

        General "Tom" Hicks /b 1-26-1869 /d 6-23-1943 married Anna McMullen   /b 1871, /d 1930.  Tom and Anna had 3 children, Dolly, John Henry, and Rosella. 

 

Dolly married Henry Montville Hubbard 3-12-1920. And had 5 children.  Charles, Ann, Alice, Dolly, and David.  Dolly was married one time before marring Monteville, but I do not know who, when, or where.  Monteville  married before Dolly to Mary Brummett.  They had 2 children, William, and Colonel.

 

John Henry married Ella Kate Robertson 12-1-1912 and had 4 children.  Wavil Mae, Walter Gordon, Wanda, and Henry Franklin.  John Henry Milton was b 4-22-1891 and Died 12-1-1930 after falling out of a tree. His son Walter and his son-in-law Wesley Sloan were with him at the time.   Ella Kate 2nd marriage was to Ova Pike.

 

Rosella Hicks died at the age of 19 in a house fire when her clothes caught fire and she ran from the house.

 

General Hicks married Neeta after Anna's Death.  Neeta refused to allow General to be buried along side Anna at the Double Spring Cemetery.  Tom is buried along side Neeta at the Pleasant Point Cemetery in Kings Mtn.
